Russia has bolstered its military and asserted itself on the world stage with a forcefulness not seen since the Cold War, ratcheting up tensions with the West. Here is what Russia has been doing to reclaim its influence

Russia is Building and Expanding Bases in the Arctic

Russia is reinvesting in its bases in the Arctic: building new ones, expanding old ones and deploying personnel to operate them. Analysts say Russia’s efforts in the Arctic are driven in part by climate change, as the country seeks to exploit and defend maritime trade routes and oil and natural gas resources in areas made more accessible by melting ice.

Its Military Budget has been Growing Steadily

Russia has made big increases to its military budget, including a jump of nearly $11 billion from 2014 to 2015. According to Moscow, it is making up for years of disinvestment after the collapse of the Soviet Union. But sanctions from the Ukrainian conflict, dropping oil prices and other financial problems have weakened the Russian economy, and analysts expect military spending to slow.

Large-Scale Military Exercises

Russia has scheduled mobilizations of more than 100,000 troops, as well as unannounced exercises that move thousands of troops with almost no notice. These efforts serve as combat training for the troops and as a show of military strength to the world. They often involve units that control Russia’s nuclear arsenal, calling attention to the country’s nuclear abilities. NATO has responded by expanding its own exercises.

“The image that Russian official sources convey is that they’re preparing for large-scale interstate war,” said Johan Norberg of the Swedish Defense Research Agency. “This is not about peacekeeping or counterinsurgency.”

In the first phase, units in the Northern Fleet were deployed to the Barents and Norwegian Seas. Troops in the Arctic mobilized. Naval helicopters began antisubmarine drills, and antiaircraft missile battalions defended the skies.
In the second phase, units from central, eastern and western Russia joined the exercise. Ships, aircraft and troops rehearsed exercises and combat, including shooting down enemy drones.
The third phase was “a scenario simulating a war with the United States and/or NATO,” according to the European Leadership Network. It brought the total exercise to 12,000 pieces of heavy equipment, 65 warships, 15 submarines and 220 aircraft.

Confrontation in other Countries’ Airspace

Russia has repeatedly entered or skirted the airspace of other countries, including the United States. Since it annexed Crimea in March 2014, the incidents have grown in number and seriousness. In November, Turkey shot down a Russian plane it said entered its airspace. The pilot was killed, as was a marine on a subsequent rescue mission.

Other incursions have been dangerous, like a near collision in March 2014 between a commercial plane carrying 132 passengers and a Russian reconnaissance plane that did not transmit its position.

“Putin is trying to provoke the United States and NATO into military action and create the appearance that they are posing a threat to Russia, in order to bolster his own popularity,” said Kimberly Marten, a professor at Barnard College and director of the United States-Russia Relations program at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute.

In several regions, Russia has exerted its military authority, rattled its rivals, and seeded instability to preserve its influence.

Russia’s role in the Syrian war escalated in September 2015 when it started airstrikes to support the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad. Most of Russia’s airstrikes have been in rebel-held territory, rather than areas controlled by the Islamic State. Amnesty International has accused Russia of using cluster munitions and unguided bombs that it says have killed hundreds of Syrian civilians.

In early 2014, Russia sent special forces troops into Crimea, when Ukraine’s pro-Moscow president was ousted. Crimea then joined Russia in a referendum that Ukraine and Western leaders consider illegal. Later that year, Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine fought Russia-backed separatists. A cease-fire agreement in February 2015 slowed the fighting, but clashes continue.

Russia won a war with Georgia in 2008, driving Georgian forces away from the separatist region of South Ossetia. The Kremlin asserts that it is protecting the interests of ethnic Russians in those areas.

Modernizing Its Military Equipment

The country is buying, updating and developing its military equipment, with the intent to modernize 70 percent of its military by 2020.

“This is Russia catching up on where the West has gotten itself technologically,” said Nick de Larrinaga at IHS Jane’s.

This is how paranoia and fear make countries act. Their gas dependant economy is collapsing and still increase military budget. Next step much more opposite voice will rise within country, eventually people will uprise due to bad economic conditions. Finally end of Putin's wet dreams.

For that collapse ,globalization is needed. Russia is going back to autarky via mass import substitution and removing the richardian rent system it based off oil and gas.

If a country wants to be truly independent, it must have a powerful army. This applies to all independent countries of our times - the US, Russia and China.

Economy comes first, military has no primary role on independence if you are economically integrated to the global capitalism to teeth and if your economy based on natural resources. Even more if the oil prices is not under your rule, you are no independent my friend. This is reality.

Russia is one country that truly understands the importance of military power.

Other way around.

There are plenty of strong economies in the world who have almost no military power (especially no thermonuclear weapons). The result is that America orders them around, and they can't say no. If America decided to bomb them to Hell, there is absolutely nothing they can do in retaliation, their weapons can't even reach the American mainland, let alone destroy it.

Whereas America fears Russia, because Russia can destroy America completely.

That's why Russia is a truly independent power. Because America can't simply bomb them off the map without being destroyed themselves. Which they can do to basically anyone else.

.
I find this quite absurd.

WEST ratches up its defences
=> This would ensure peace.

Russia does so
=> Russia is going mad, its economy is failing, it should concentrate on its economy.... blah blah blah.....

I personally wish Russia starts more SSBN patrols in Southern Hemisphere, there will be lots of..... if you know what I mean.

Having nukes mean someone will think twice before attacking you,and NATO and Russia aren't that crazy to start full scall wars (And nuclear) over some issues and some countries. (if you know what i mean...).
-
And those that literally wish for,NATO,Russia will bring the entire world with themselves in their fall if it happens..
-
North Korea has some rag tags nukes, but nobody dares to do sh*t against them. :pdf:
-
Better to avoid any major war and stick to our common ennemy that is the ISIS,(supported by some NATO member...) and the other terrorists groups. @vostok

This mess in Syria was created by US, West and GCC countries. The ISIS & other Terrorist are supported by them. Thier common enemy is Assad Regime.

On other hand we are against ISIS & Moderate Terrorist and Support Assad, our Ally. The parties involved in this shit has conflict of interest. Hence, our enemy is not a common.

After Paris attack France has sense of realisation what mess Territorist can bring to her. Unless, all EU countries stand hand in hand and fight ISIS and other Savegese along with Syria-Russia, they'll pay a dear price in near future which is going to be horrible for her.

Those who questions about Russia sustaining this War - we can continue to support Syrian Regime for Years & they can fight on ground with ISIS and other Savegese.

Same mistake as most members do usually... Reading but not analyzing..
I didn't say that there is no need for army, I insist that economy comes first to establish and maintain strong up-to-date military might. Those rich countries you mentioned are the ones who choose not to be a military power or no ambitious goals or wealth to protect but feel safe under some kind of military or political umbrella or agreements. That's vital rule; economy > military.

What's wrong with strong economies with no military power asking the US for protection of their territorial defence and security? So far, the United States has looked after all it's NATO members for six-seven decades. Not a single war amongst these strong economies. That in itself is impressive.

Tens of millions of Asians, Africans and Latin Americans aren't exactly running off to China and Russia just because they have thermonuclear weapons.

Look what happened to the Soviet Union despite all its might. The US did not need to drop a single bomb on Russia. One decade long war and that was it.

You need both.

China during the Century of Humiliation had a very strong economy... but we had a very weak military.

The result? Everyone knows.

What's the point of having a strong economy if an actual world power like America can simply demand, as they did with Japan and the Plaza Accord, for their vassal to break their own economy in favor of Americas? In the Plaza Accord, America decided that Japanese exporters were too competitive, so they forced them to do a massive appreciation of the Yen. The result was an economic crash and several lost decades for Japan.

Nothing wrong with asking the US for protection. But the US is fickle, their friends in one decade become their enemies in the next decade (Saddam being the obvious example).

What happens if they turn around and decide you are their enemy? Then what?

I guess you remember when America was banging the war drums against Pakistan somewhere during 2011. Or when they famously threatened to send Pakistan back to the stone age if they did not help America invade Afghanistan. Their alignments are fickle and ever changing.

This is your politicians fault on the point of making right decisions. Military is a cash eater and you need strong economy to feed it up and keep strong. One of the criteria of military might can be calculated of resources. How long can an army keep fighting during a war in a row, cash stocks, reflections to the domestic economy etc..
