Russian Ground Forces will hold drills with Pakistan, India and CSTO countries in 2017

Russian Ground Forces plan to hold joint drills with forces of Pakistan, India, Mongolia, Vietnam and Nicaragua in 2017, the Defense Ministry told journalists on Thursday.

“In 2017, it is planned to hold drills of formations and units of the Ground Forces in six joint military drills of peacekeeping and anti-terrorist course, with formations of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, India, Mongolia, Vietnam and Nicaragua as well as with formations of the Armed Forces of CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organisation) member countries,” the ministry said.

“Main efforts in preparing the Ground Forces in the next year will be aimed at further improvement of mountain training, as well as actions of formations at unknown training ranges and in the Arctic zone,” the ministry added.

The Russian Defense Ministry reminded that last year joint international drills held drills with several countries including the joint Russian-Pakistani mountainous drills “Friendship-2016.”

During a press briefing in Moscow, Russian Defense Ministry said joint military drills will be aimed at further improvement of combat operation preparedness against terrorism, mountain training, as well as actions of formations at different zones.

I think that Pakistan should veer towards holding more exercises with its neighbours, bar India. Exercises with Russia will reduce Indian influence, if Pakistan was to make a move towards this, it would be in Russia's interests to agree so as to influence a region rampant with a US attempting to increase influence. Also, just a few things such as sending Pakistani tank commanders to Russia's annual Tank Triathlon to gain experience as well as increased international coverage. TO add to this, sending a detachment to participate in Moscow's Annual Victory Day Parade.

In terms of China, large-scale exercises in mountainous territory would better train Pakistani troops for regions such as the Hindu Kush and be advantageous for China to increase presence and expertise as well as knowledge of the Tibet region if the exercises are held there.

Just a few thoughts on how to strengthen ties with two regional powers which would be a win-win situation for Pakistan and Russia/China.

Hopefully, the exercises and such events will be happening on regular basis and may such events turn into more deeper, stronger and large scope relations in different departments of interests for the benefits of both the countries and region as well.

Incorrect.

The statements issued to assuage any Indian concerns have always come from junior Russian staff from Russian Embassy in India and never from the senior ministers of Russia.
