On October 7, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) won an order amounting to USD 440 million for three Arctic shuttle tankers from the Russian "Sovcomflot" shipping company.
The carrying capacity of each tanker is 42 thousand tons. After their completion, all three ships will go to Murmansk.
It isn't the first time "Sovcomflot" buys tankers from Samsung. In 2005 the Korean company got a similar order for the construction of cargo ships.
"Sovcomflot" is the largest state-owned Russian shipping company offering a full range of crude oil, refined petroleum products, and liquefied gas transportation services. It is one of the world’s leading tanker owners. The company actively participates in key Russian oil and gas development projects including operations in harsh ice environment, as well as successfully competes in the international maritime shipping markets. Its fleet consisted of 153 its own and chartered vessels with a total deadweight of more than 12.6 million tons. Of them: 129 own ships, 2 vessels chartered , 9 tugs chartered through affiliated LLC "Rosnefteflot", 4 LNG tankers, and 9 product carriers LR1 owned by joint ventures with "Sovcomflot" participation.
Apart of that, as of mid 2014 year "Sovcomflot" had 8 vessels under construction, including 3 LNG tankers, 1 LNG tanker icebreaker, 1 multifunctional icebreaking supply ship, 3 multifunctional icebreaking supply vessels for offshore production platforms. The total deadweight of the ships built is 387.9 thousand tons. All of these vessels are scheduled for delivery in the period between August 2014 to March 2017.
Samsung Heavy Industries is the third largest shipbuilding company in the world. In 2013 its revenues amounted to $ 13.89 billion.
