Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 14

By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Russia may create a military base in Turkey within the sale and purchase agreements signed regarding Russian S-400 Triumph surface-to-air missile systems, the Turkish media reported Dec. 14.

The Russian military base in Turkey may be created until 2019, according to the report.

After Turkey acquires the S-400 Triumph air defense systems, it is planned to deploy two missile batteries on the Turkish border with Syria, one battery in the Mediterranean region, and another one in Turkey’s Black Sea Region.

Turkey will receive the first S-400 Triumph air defense systems from Russia in 2019.

Earlier, Turkish National Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli said that the control system of Russian S-400 Triumph surface-to-air missile systems, to be acquired by Turkey from Russia, will be under the control of the Turkish side.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Russia and Turkey are negotiating terms of a loan for the purchase of S-400 Triumph. Reportedly, Turkey will buy several S-400 Triumph systems for $2.5 billion, and has already transferred the first batch of payment.

no source, must be hopeless source really for such a hopeless predictions

i was the first one who analyzed that many doors will be open for Turkey if NATO lose Turkey.

many Turk members , Germans disagreed from my point .

Putin will do every thing whatever weaken NATO . so good days are coming for Turkey.

.
Why are Turks buying Russian S-400? How does this pan out with NATO? And I would think TuaF is more than capable of handling air threats from Syria, Mediteranean? What is going on? Or has TuaF been so depleted post the coup that S-400 is needed?

Source is Habertürk

"...according to Bülent Aydemir's report from Habertürk newspaper..."

Btw this is ;

"S-400’lerin ilk 2 bataryası Suriye sınırına, 1’i Akdeniz’e doğru; diğerleri Marmara-Boğazlar-Ege-Karadeniz güvenliği için konuşlandırılacak."

even more interesting. 2 S-400 batteries on Syrian border, 1 battery in mediterranean seaside (probably Mersin), 1 ststem İstanbul/Marmara region, 1 battery Aegean region (probably İzmir), at least 1 battery Blacksea region (probably Sinop)

So, at least 7 batteries we are gonna get o_O i bet 1 will also be put in Ankara, so 8.

If we buy 2 systems (1+1), each system has 4 batteries or what?

No airforce in the world including the mighty USAF can shoot down a ballistic missile hurling at Mach 5 or above. ADS is required. You question is akin to asking why USA is deploying BMDS while they have such a formidable airforce.
There is no rule that forbids Turkey from purchasing defence equipment from non-NATO sources. If there was any, USA would have invoked and forced Turkey to cancel the deal or leave the NATO.

There is no rule
There is no rule but purchasing weapons from Russia - a country that is considered hostile to NATO is not the "done thing". All NATO countries are members of NATO because of their political and geo-strategic leaning that fits within US political architecture. To buy weapons from Russia is to raise doubts about that. Which is why I asked Turkish members - is Turkey drifting away from NATO or is this some sort of bargaining chip by Erdogan.

I doubt it.
Maybe some Russians will be posted in Turkey, but S400 isn't worth having both Russians and the NATO using your country as a football field.

There is not official information about any Russian base on Turkish territory. Its just some rumors and/or fake news and yes Turkey is drifting from NATO slowly. When you are in NATO that means you must put the national interests of US above your own and it means that you cant conduct normal politics and to have good relations with neighbor countries like Russia and Iran. The bad thing is that Turkey still can acquire a lot from NATO and NATO countries so if we manage to play nice untill we complete our national goals and we are more independent in especially defense industry then we can think about it but now.... Its to early. For now we must balance as hard as we can and take as much as we can from the both sides and even if that means to walk on the edge of the cliff. They know that Turkey can be powerful ally.

Its against Missiles i guess, also the reson why Turkey decided to get S-400 is to show US that there are alternatives to NATO, the US is causing troubles at Turkish border so you can guess why Turkey is doing what its doing.

.
Russia is not a threat towards Turkey as long as they grip our neck firm, with our energy/trade dependency on Russia.

But one day if we get rid of energy and trade dependency on Russia (not in next two decades), then Russia would be a threat towards us.
