Russian military expert Dmitry Drozdenko expressed his optimism about the future of Egypt and Russia's military, especially with regard to the planned deal between Moscow and Cairo to supply the latter with military equipment to arm the helicopter warship known as Mistral, according to Sputnik.

Earlier this week, the media reported that a delegation of Russian experts had arrived in Egypt to negotiate the delivery of Russian military equipment to the first-class warship Mistral, which Egypt recently bought from France.

"According to the planned plan between the Egyptian and Russian sides, the latter will supply Egypt with weapons, communications equipment and electronic warfare systems for the Mestral, which is also likely to be equipped with the Ka-52K Katran helicopter.

According to representatives of the Russian side of the deal, they said in early April that everything is almost ready for the transfer of military equipment, and that the passage of the deal depends only on the signing of both parties to the consent, pointing out that two of the "Mistral" were first built by France for Russian, but in August 2015 French President Francois Hollande decided to stop the deal because of events in eastern Ukraine.

He added that the decision of Moscow and Paris to cancel the deal was good news for Egypt, where the latter initiated the purchase of the aircraft carrier to supply its fleet, to convey, "Dmitry", that the aircraft carrier was built specifically in accordance with the needs of the Russian armed forces, and for this reason adapts automatically with Russian radio waves and military equipment.

"In principle, there is no option for Egypt in terms of which equipment will be installed, but it depends on the price and the date of delivery, stressing that he knew that the Russian and Egyptian parties will reach a compromise and sign the agreement, noting that Egypt Will also agree to purchase the modified "Ka-52K Katran" aircraft.

According to Dimitri, the last aircraft were tested in Syria, while Russian aircraft carriers "Admiral Kuznetsov," to say that it is a wonderful helicopter, with unique military and offensive capabilities, following that this is the first time a helicopter poses a real danger to modern warships .

We should just be a ally to everyone but Israel. Egypt is on good terms with pretty much everyone.

.
History unfortunately proved otherwise, I am afraid. However it might be worth giving it another try but if I was Al-Sisi I would never go all-in on Russia (Putin). Nothing wrong with having relations with Russia (Putin) but such a relationship should be mutually beneficial.

In general, without insulting/causing harm to any fellow Arabs here or those reading my posts from the "outside", but past pro-Soviet/Russian Arab regimes and current ones, don't exactly scream of success to me and to most other people (neutral observers).

If anything the right superpower partner, aside from the US, is China.

That's the right policy and a policy that all Arab countries should pursue.

People in Egypt are exaggerating the relationship with Russia "Now" to be a strategic ally or number 1 , they are just a good ally just like USA or even less , we are not like old days with Soviet union pre october war or usa follower like before 2011 we are now following a balanced relationship with all the countries (usa , France , china , russia , germany ) and this way better

KSA/GCC and most other Arab countries are doing the same thing which is the right thing otherwise you risk ending up like another Libya, Algeria (in the 1990's and possibly - hopefully not, in the future) or Syria.

.
The GCC and Arabs themselves be A superpower if they keep it to Islam and teachings of Prophet ..but sad to see the Situation we are in Today that we need one super power or another just to survive

Egypt keeps its strategic allies balanced out, it is smart and wise, look at it this way, Egypt unlike in the past, is getting the very best _and some more_ of Russian weapons made for export, while at the same time it keeps receiving military aid from the US and keeps best relations with both by doing military exercises and naval and air exercises with both, economics wise it is doing the same.. so no worries there..

In this case, with the unloading of the 2 Mistrals off of Russian hands (we actually did them a favor since they were stuck with paying for them but not being able to acquire them due to Crimea sanctions.) We also ordered 46-50 MiG-35's, 50+/- Ka-52 Alligators and an almost certain contract will be signed for at least 36 Ka-52K Katrans to load the Mistrals up and the S-300VM deal and prior deals such as the TOR/BUK SAM system etc. That's A LOT of Russian military hardware all relatively recently bought by Egypt which leads me to this - being that there is such a drastic upgrading of the Egyptian military (and I'm not even including the other deals such as the Rafales, the Gowinds or the FREMMs or the Type 209 subs etc., etc., but just the Russian deals........and being that the ultimate stealth fighter has been introduced to a certain and only state in the ME, shouldn't a deal for at least 12 T-50's be strongly considered and Russia giving Egypt leeway in a form of cost or prioritizing (after or with India) in supplying their stealth jet? Even if it could only be delivered by 2025 at the soonest, why wouldn't such a deal be enticing and even quite possible considering the above mentioned and what you said and the topic of this discussion? We know the F-35 is never coming to Egypt (maybe Saudi Arabia which would be fantastic) and we are in the age of stealth (which BTW will be replaced a lot sooner than people think with UACV's and other types of warfare) that Egypt should take full advantage of getting into the game and the T-50/PAK-FA is the ideal choice under the circumstances. Maybe even with a joint Saudi/Egypt deal for these. Egypt could do well operating just 1 squadron of 12 aircraft. What think? ;-)

I do agree..
Egypt keeps most of its strategic deals secret till they are signed and delivered, look at the SU-35 deal for 29 fighters, no one knows which SU-XX fighters Egypt will be getting, but just by analysing the latest procurement one can see that Egypt goes for the latest versions, tech and upgrades, hence It points to the SU-35 or a at least to a very advanced SU-30 variant, custom made for Egypt with most SU-35 avionics..and of course the most logical step will be the induction of the Pak-FA, I suggest 2 squadrons (that is at least $2 billion), but might be worth it to (close the technological gap)/counter the 50 F-35 Usrael has ordered..
There is also the Chinese option with the FC-31 stealth fighter that Egypt can get 36 of them for the same cost of the 24 Russian Pak-FA.. and if the economy shows good prospects, why not both, for a low-high combo of stealth fighters.. That will make 60 of them in the EAF for a merely $4.5 to $5 billion.. nothing that Egypt can not pull off, we have seen a deal of that amount with France lately (24 Rafale, 1 Fremm and 4 Gowind plus the 2 Mistrals)

People in Egypt started to be realistic about the relations with Russia after the tourism crisis between the two countries.

No they are not. The US is litterally providing billions upong billions of dollars worth of military equipment to Egypt every year. You switch the Russia and also those goodies and funding will cease to stop.

2025 the soonest for PaKFA... More like 2035+(the soonest)
PAKFA is still in trial for at least till 2022-2025 ( soonest) then you have to supply RU and India first... you'll get yourself at least till 2030-33 ( the soonest) and then you will have to engage in he deal/trial, you'll need at least another 2-5 years. and Then at least a year for first pcs.

the FC-31 for Egypt will be better, since you can get some sort of ToT or Licencing, therefore some sort of industrialisation going on. And some sort of a common platform among those in the region. Since PAKFA was not meant for Only Export. it will be a critical tech and therefore not sellable to anyone...

Good to see you again, BTW. Where you been? :-) Small correction to your statement - the US aid and all American goodies does not restrict Egypt from purchasing arms/weapons from Russia or other countries. The US military aid is restricted to purchasing only US-made weapons and cannot be used to purchase arms or weapons platforms from other countries, since it needs to be recycled into the US economy. That's the primary condition to the US aid which is the same condition applied to Israel's $3.2 billion in aid. It does not prohibit purchasing arms in any quantity from other countries, as long as the funding is not part of the US aid.

And that's ok. Point is (like I mentioned on the Armed Forces Thread) that this aircraft should definitely be the next choice. Not the Su-35 or anything else. Time to get in line for this so we don't fall far behind. Waiting any longer will only extend that delivery timeline since others will beat us to it and get in line first.

I understand the whole ToT argument and how Egypt should get in on that etc. I don't think the Egyptian Armed Forces care much about a home-built fighter or anything along those lines as their philosophy is different. They prefer to purchase what is needed because it's easier and faster and in some ways, cheaper. Any ToT of any kind, though, should really be on items that would be critically needed during wartime; weapons such as missiles and PGM's. Critical spare parts, but I believe Egypt is already involved in that latter phase.

The problem with going Chinese is what Frogman eluded to in the other thread (and to which I responded to in a long post that still needs moderator approval lol) and he's 100% right on his point. Assuming the future fleet will primarily consist of the F-16's, Rafales and MiG-35's, there is absolutely no reason to add a 4th country manufacturer to that. We'll be back to the mish-mash we've been dealing with for the last 40+ years. We're already wondering why they just didn't stick to more Rafales instead of introducing the MiG-35 and keep things to 2 makes, but they did. So we'll basically have 2 separate forces as far as compatibility/interoperability with the F-16's and Rafales on one side, and the MiG-35 on the other. If a 5th gen is introduced, it's better to make a compatible to either of those 2 groups than a completely new and separate make, in the FC-31. That's the logic that we're trying to follow and hoping the EAF does as well for the reasons mentioned.

F-16 will not last... they are at their ends in the coming decades.
As for Rafales, well Egypt will "maybe" buy more later on, when some F-16 will be decommisioned.

As for MiGs... well till this day I can't believe they took it... but I can understand it could be a capable aircraft (when it has it's full package, like AESA etc...) and it's cheaper.

As for 5th gen aircrafts... well whatever the manufacturer, the last Q is: Could it win/keep up with an equivalent 5th gen one... well only Combat will tell us...
PKAFA and FC-31 are 5th gen but not in the same category... one is a medium heavy and the other a light one... Having both is interesting...but is it necessary...

Local manufacturing and mostly Def ones is a must for a country...more when it's a country like Egypt... One of the strongest in the rigion and yet no critical def industries going around... it's mostly a mistake... a critical one...
Cut the flow= Win...

That's true, but don't you think that ToT is really beneficial up to a certain point? For example, wouldn't it be smarter to be able to produce the vital items that would be cut off, like you said, such as spare parts and weapons. Those are the more pressing things during times of war since they're smaller, easier to handle and are more in demand. Egypt should really develop it's own A/A missile and PGM's with corresponding hardware/software to integrate them in all or even just some of its aircraft. Problem is getting the source codes from the Americans who will most likely never allow that. Not sure if the French or Russians would, but that can be figured before going into the plan. It's a big task and unlikely to happen, but seems like the best option IMO.
