Russia, India, China step up solidarity

Vladimir Radyuhin

They have coordinated positions on Kosovo, Iran, Afghanistan

YEKATERINBURG (Russia): Russia, India and China displayed enhanced solidarity on a range of key international issues at their meeting here on Thursday in a sign that their trilateral dialogue may be acquiring a strategic dimension.

In a joint communiqué, adopted at their eighth meeting, the Foreign Ministers of the countries “reaffirmed the commonality” in their views on the global situation and, for the first time, set out coordinated positions on Kosovo, Iran, Afghanistan and the Asia-Pacific region, as India displayed a greater readiness to go along with its partners in the triangle on these issues.

On Kosovo, India for the first time joined Russia and China in stating categorically in the RIC communiqué that “the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo is contrary to the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244,” and calling for settling the issue “in accordance with norms of international law” and on the basis of “an agreement” and “through negotiations” between Belgrade and Pristina.

Earlier India only said it “takes note” of the declaration of independence of Kosovo and was “studying the evolving situation.”

On Iran’s nuclear programme, RIC called for “a political and diplomatic settlement” of the problem “through negotiations.”

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee went even further in his speech at the meeting, saying India supported Tehran’s right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy provided it fulfilled its international obligations, that all outstanding issues should be resolved through the International Atomic Energy Agency and that “confrontation and destabilisation” in the region had adverse effects on the situation.

Pat for Pranab

At a bilateral meeting with Mr. Mukherjee later, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov congratulated him “on his positive role” at the RIC meeting.

For the first time in the RIC format, Russia and China welcomed “India’s aspirations for playing an enhanced role” as an observer in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

This also indicated New Delhi’s revived interest in the regional security body, which unites Russia, China and four Central Asian states.

The RIC troika reaffirmed a “common desire to expand multilateral cooperation with the Central Asian states” and agreed to identify “various forms of trilateral interaction” in the region.

It vowed to “actively deepen dialogue and interaction between the three countries.” Mr. Mukherjee showed remarkable enthusiasm for the troika dialogue.

‘Unique mechanism’

Describing the RIC format as a “unique mechanism” for strengthening cooperation, he said the troika sent a message to the world that the three leading economies having common views on regional and global issues was of the “utmost importance and has its impact on the overall international situation.”

Mr. Mukherjee praised the troika for extending its practical cooperation to trade, technology, disaster management, relief, health and medicine, which would be “highly beneficial to large chunks of our populations.”

Russia and China sided with India in calling for “expeditious finalisation of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism” submitted at the U.N. by New Delhi.

The three ministers “reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation among their countries to combat terrorism.”

It was agreed that India would host the next stand-alone meeting of RIC.

Honestly, I'm not a Sinophobic, but I don't trust the CPC. They have stabbed us in our backs once; they will do it the moment they get a chance again.

However, diplomatic options, like the RIC, do ensure that the PRC is more engaged with us. This keeps their adventurism in check. I just hope, one day we are able to stare them down. Today, we are more or less at par.

^^^They won't be doing any back-stabbing if we're strong enough.

The idea is to talk business, and back it up with a strong armed forces, and plenty of long range nukes.

Russia can play a very important role in Asia as well, given its geographical promiximity in the region. Russia, China and India really can benifit from each oher not only in economic terms, but also in defence co-operation, if only china can see India as a partner in growth rather than as a rival.

Instead of wanting to be a headache for USA or any other country for that matter, RIC should concentrate on Asia by :

1. Increasing faith & confidence amongst the 3.
2. Increase trade.
3. Present a common front on world issues.

We are after all living in the most important part of the world, for centuries we were exploited by the West, its time we realised our own potential. This can be done by solving mutual differences & removing distrust.

Just because someone has another opinion ,it does not have to imply confrontation.

support this view, and i believe it

t is now official! China has emerged as India's largest trade partner, a position that was monopolized by the United States so far. This was revealed by the Economic Survey for 2007-2008, which said that'China's trade share during April-October 2007 was even higher than that of the US by Rs.600 crore.' As and when India's final trade statistics are released for the year 2007-08, China will be shown as India's No. 1 trade partner. The development marks the culmination of a trend that has been picking up momentum in recent years. Only six years ago, the volume of trade between India and China was barely one-fourth of the trade between US and India. In fact, the UK, Belgium, Germany, UAE and Switzerland were all larger trading partners than China at that stage.

China's emergence as India's largest trading partner was not unexpected. All studies of Sino-Indian bilateral trade had indicated this trend. At the end of 2007, the bilateral trade stood at US$38.6 billion. Given the growth trajectory, even the target of US$60 billion by 2010 should be achieved much earlier. This makes one wonder, as Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said during his January trip to China, if "India and China have been underestimating the capabilities of their respective industries and their strong urge to do business with each other." Surely then, more ambitious targets are required.

Coming to Russia:

India and Russia have established a new milestone in bilateral trade and economic relations, with India giving its consent to Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and both sides setting up a Joint Study Group (JSG) to finalise a roadmap for increasing the bilateral trade turnover to US $ 10 billion by 2010.

Indo-Russian bilateral trade in 2004-05 was of the order of Rs.8369.85 crore i.e., US $ 1862.81 million (US $ 1.8 billion). Of this, India's exports to Russia amounted to Rs.2684.33 crore i.e., US $ 597.43 million and India's imports from Russia valued at Rs.5685.52 crore i.e., US $ 1265.38 million.

Defence is a very importan aspect of Indo-Russian relations, Billions of dollars worth of deals.

AND Sino-Russian trade stood at 40 billion in 2007 and is expected to be of the same amount even this year.

Now Imagine a free trade agreement between India,China and Russia....that could be a huge economic benifit for India/Russia/China.Gas pipelines from Russia to China and India..not only India/china and russia, the whole south asia and central asian countries can benifit from this!!!:agree:

India will not join China against USA.

China doesn't play against USA unless USA supports Tibetan, Taiwanese independence and East Turkistan Terrorism.
