You should visit both - they are so different! St. Petersburg is amazingly beautiful, you will find there a nightlife of a different level - more intellectual, Moscow is more aggressive, party-like city, a lot of shopping and really big prices - but also worth seeing.

St.Petersburg was founded in 18th century. It has typical aristocratic/empire luxury style of historical architecture of the 18/19th century, which is similar to other European capitals of that time. On the other hand Moscow has 3 historical backgrounds. It was political center of Rus in 15-18th centuries and of the USSR in the 20th century, and since its foundation Moscow was economic center. So it has corresponding styles of historical architecture.

Also if you like the theatre and dancing, it is highly recommended to visit the ballet. Russian classical ballet is considered a national art, like the opera for Italians. Just like in Italy, Russian opera and ballet are loved and supported by the local mafia. Despite this, the Russian ballet is the best in the world.
