Sparsely population, soooooo farrrrr from the "mainstream" world. Cold regions of Northern hemisphere..where nobody would even go.

Russians have never remained 'relevant' to the world other than USSR era. Before that, their relevance was only local.

Russians persecute minorities too...I'll take West over Russia any day.

Russia was a great power before the U.S. emerged on this planet. And it still will be when everyone will forget about the United States.

U.S is a superpower with influence wayyyyy beyond its borders...

Historical superpowers who shaped history are Egyptians, Greeks, Roman empire, Abbasid/Ummayad empire, Ottoman Empire, British/French and so on.

Russians only had one such power..USSR and that too just for 50 to 70 years..

Other Russian 'great powers' weren't even noticeable outside of their own sphere of influence..and were hardly the history-shapers.

Russia always had a HUGE land area..not because it was some awesome power..but because majority of the Russian land on nothern cold ice-plate that nobody gives a shit about anyways.

In the 18-19 centuries, Russia has been a major player in continental Europe. At sea, England was stronger, but at continent Russia was. Russia alone defeated the army of a united Europe, under the leadership of Napoleon.
