Russia has modernized two radars in Syria and Lebanon to warn U.S. or Israel attack against Iran.

Russia has modernized two radars in Syria and Lebanon that could threaten U.S. or Israel’s ability to launch a surprise attack against Syria and Iran, Israeli DEBKAfile portal said on Monday, February 27, 2012. The range of the Jabal Al Harrah electronic and surveillance station south of Damascus has been increased to cover all parts of Israel and Jordan, the Gulf of Aqaba and northern Saudi Arabia.

The range of a Russian-equipped Syrian radar stationed on Lebanon’s Mount Sannine has also been extended, and the data-sharing capability of both radars has been improved.

As a result, the radars are now capable of tracking “U.S. and Israeli naval and aerial movements in the Eastern Mediterranean up to and including Cyprus and Greece.”

“Moscow decided to boost its radar tracking and surveillance reach for Iran’s benefit in response to a complaint from Tehran that it could not longer count on Russia for a real-time alert on an incoming U.S. or Israeli military strike, because those resources were stretched to the limit in support of the Assad regime,” DEBKAfile said citing its sources in the U.S. military.

Russia is alarmed by the growing threat of a military strike on Iran, which is increasingly reported as being an option under consideration by Israeli and U.S. military planners as Tehran continues to move ahead with its uranium enrichment program.

Moscow proposes to recognize Iran’s right to develop a civilian nuclear program, including the right to enrich uranium in exchange for placing the country’s nuclear activities under the tight control of the International Atomic Energy Agency

At the same time, Russia has strongly opposed foreign interference in a political crisis in Syria and warned against a “Libyan scenario” in the country.

Earlier in February, Russia and China vetoed a U.S.-backed resolution calling on the Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to step down.

Moscow believes that attempts to bring democracy through military intervention in the Arab world would compromise the existing system of international security and “backfire with catastrophic consequences to the world.”

Israel did a mock test over Lebnoon 1-2 weeks back , where F15 planes flew over LEBNOOON airspace for no reason , except to fly and test out if their presence was `detected`and yes the presence was plastered all over newspapers in 20 minutes

So radars are doing their job

woow... as if those radars can't be jammed !! The mock flyby over lebanon was only to check if radars have been installed or not.

For God's sake. So called "Debka portal" is nothing but old couple inventing stories.

Most likely not far away the ELINT suckers in IDAF were sucking out all the frequencies and signals of the radar's to develop a counter measure. The Israelis are too good when it comes to stuff like this, most likely these radar sites will be knocked out in less than half an hour by the IDAF.

Route 3 seems to be the most likely one.. you know, with the Saudis hating the Iranians and all.

US still has more control over Iraq than Iran.

False. Then why couldn't they get Iraq to sign a SOPA agreement? Iran has much more influence in Iraq over US, this is a no-brainer.

How is Route 2 possible if Iraq is now more pro-Iran?

Iraq does not have any control over their airspace, so Iraqi objections really won't matter as they can't do anything about it.

first statement can be true to some extent. the government is pro-us the people pro Iran.

and using SOPA as a example isn't really valid in my mind. many other countries who are influenced by USA didn't sign the bill and Obama has said he'll veto it if it passes the congress!

second line is correct. Iraq doesn't have a air force. everyone who wants can come and fly above their skies free!

Dont you think this sort of step would also alert forces sitting in Iran :)

I've maintained for months that Israel has very limited ability to strike Iran. Iran is simply too far away to make a conventional strike both possible and effective.

Diplomacy is necessary here. And perhaps a secret cable to Iran announcing the long-presumed presence of thermonuclear weapons in Israel is a reality, and that they would be launched in an overwhelming strike if Iran attempts a nuclear attack of her own.

I want to add, lest I be proved wrong, an attack by Israel is possible... they can get F-15/16 over Iranian soil, but the likelihood of them being effective is low, IMO.
