A report published by a Russian military news website on March 1 suggests that China’s most advanced frigate, the Type 054 multirole warship along with its variants, were developed with the help of Russian experts.
There are more Type 054 frigates in service with the PLA Navy than any other class of warship. At the start of 2014, the PLA Navy had 15 of the frigates in service and five were being built at Guangzhou’s Whampoa Shipyard and the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai, which differ from their predecessors in their missile systems and electrical interference weapons.
The frigate was developed quite quickly, as its initial design process began in 2009 and it went into production just three years later, taking two to three years less than any other warship China has developed. One Chinese expert said that this was due to concern over territorial disputes concerning islands in the East and South China seas, although the Russian website suggested it may have been due to help from Russia.
The report said that China will produce a first batch of 20 Type 056 frigates once the new ship, currently under development, is ready to enter production. The PLA Navy are said to require 40 Type 056 frigates in total and their construction is likely to cost US$8 billion.
The new ships will likely be constructed simultaneously at the Whampoa, Hudong-Zhonghua, Wuchang and Dalian shipyards.
Six more warships are expected to be commissioned in China in the near future and will likely be deployed to the South Sea Fleet, as China is currently engaged in territorial disputes with Vietnam and the Philippines in the South China Sea region.
The development of fleets in Northeast Asian countries is different to European countries, according to the article.
The report took Japan as an example, stating that Japan favors destroyers that can be assigned a range of different combat roles or special missions, whereas China has a more balanced approach, preferring to design several different kinds of submarine in order to complete a range of different missions.
The report stated that in both countries, frigates were used as the first line of defense against submarines and to protect marine territory and strategic naval corridors.
Looks like all the major military technologies of china indeed work of Russian Brains . From attack helicopter to China's most advanced frigate. Only god know still how many projects are under Russian. Definitely not stopped with just two .
