Mig-29 has better maneuverability and thus superior dog fighting ability than F-16. The BVR seems to be on F-16's advantage over Mig-29 but I think the latest developments of Mig-29 and the Mig-35 can achieve the same BVR capabilities of the latest F-16s or F-15s. or they can be fitted with western avionics and reach the same level of BVR capability. e.g. if Mig-35 wins the MRCA competition then India might use Israeli Elta radar system and probably French avionics(like Su-30MKI). The usual BVR missile for Russians-R77 adder actually(as reported) has longer range than American AMRAAM BVR missile.
The Mig 29 has better manoeuvrability at very low speeds, above those very low speeds it gets more even. F16's and F15's (at least the US's ones) use better HMS and WVR missiles than the 29's these days anyway.
The R-77 reportedly has longer absolute range than older versions of the AMRAAM, but the useful range (no escape zone) is supposedly lower and it has inferior capabilities to cope in a electronic warfare environment, the missile's on board sensors and systems are also inferior to the more recent versions of the AMRAAM.
