Russia 'FURIOUS' after UK air force cleared to shoot down Moscow warplanes

. . . .
Outraged Russian officials asked UK ministers "to provide an official explanation" of reports that RAF Tornados operating over Iraq have been fitted with heat-seeking missiles designed for arial combat
...
It emerged last night that RAF fighter pilots have been granted permission to shoot down Russian jets if they come under attack while completing missions over Iraq.
Putin's military officials anger over RAF go ahead to shoot down Russian military jets | UK | News | Daily Express

Note 1: heat seaking missiles for aerial combat = (relatively) short range missiles = self defence Note 2: Tornado is a strike asset and a relatively poor dogfighter, certainly by comparison to the Su-27/30/34 family
Note 3: That's two very big IFs > a) over Iraq and and b) under attack

If anything Russian would attack a Tornado over Iraq seriously, it would be a Su-30 or Su-34 because typically Su-25 and Su-24 can carry only 8km R-60MK or 20km R-73E short range IRH AAMs. Tornado can outrun Su-25, is probably on equal footing or has some advantage relative to Su-24. Tornado has ASRAAM, which out ranges R-60 and R-73

What are those white thingies below the wing?

SARH R-27 (AA-10 'Alamo') medium- and IRH R-73 (AA-11 'Archer') short-range air-to-air missiles if I'm not mistaken. Although the Su-30SM in Syria could also used the 40km R-74 AAM instead of the R-73.

This was upon arrival in Syria. I don't if they are carried by the Su-30 all the time, but they certainly were brought along. What for, one might ask?

A Su-30 or Su-34 with 70+ km range R-27 can engage a 50km range ASRAAM equipped Tornado BVR: not a fair fight. And WVR, I would think the Su-30SM would outfly the Tornado: not a fair fight either.

IMHO: better safe than sorry.

I think that news is bogus. Check it out....

U.S. offers coordination on Syria to avoid incidents - Putin

Russia has received U.S. proposals on how to coordinate efforts in Syria to avoid any incidents, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

"There have been U.S. proposals on how we can structure our military-technical work to avoid any incident whatsoever," he said in Vladimir Solovyov's Sunday Night program aired by the Rossiya 1 television channel on Oct. 11.

"Our specialists have received requests and proposals from Americans, formulated their vision of this joint work and sent it to Pentagon," Putin said.

"I hope the next step will be made, without which resolving the situation will be impossible, namely, that the joint work of searching for a political solution will begin," Putin said.

And that obviously would include all NATO aircraft in the zone of action including the RAF.

He will order WWIII if Russian Jets will shoot UK jets. UK still remember what Germans did to them. Russia is all together a different game.

Who the Fu<k said anything about shooting down the planes.

Russian, US, UK, France, Turkey, Iraq, Syria are flying planes around bombing their 'terrorists'. You think anyone of these nations gave orders to their pilots to shoot down a plane?

It's nothing but a show of force. And testing out their EW suites. The turf has been laid.

Grow up.

Shooting down Russian planes over the Air-Space of a third nation?

What consequences should there be?
Mind you, only after being attacked by Russian planes over a third nation first.

That is a 'minor' but a crucial difference

A few dozen 10 warhead SS28s will sink that tiny island nation. Uk is an ant compared to Russia. The British Empire is a fossil now.
Yes and pigs fly. Bye Bye,

Seriously doubt it. Putin knows his country is not in any shape to take on NATO conventionally, especially considering the buildup of NATO forces in Eastern Europe. He will not expand the battlespace to where NATO can do serious damage to Russia proper, and unless everyone was wrong about him being a rational leader, he won't launch nukes over a downed fighter jet or 5 in Syria.

I could see

That said there will be no shooting down, this is for self-defense, and hopefully the Russian planes won't try targeting RAF jets and play with fire.

Leave it brother. We all know shape and size of every country and coalition. USA took so many countries alongside it to attack Iraq and Afghanistan, If Russia is in such a bad shape why did you not go to save Georgia or Ukraine ? If Russia is in such a bad shape then why did it jumped to save Syria and why all you all super powers are not in a position to engage Russia ?
