Russia for proper probe into Rohingya atrocities

Russian ambassador on Thursday stressed the need for proper investigation into atrocities committed against minority Rohingya people in Myanmar.
‘Atrocities happened to them’ (Rohingya people) and a ‘proper investigation of that’ is required, Russian ambassador in Dhaka Alexander Ignatov said at a seminar in Dhaka.
When asked if Russia failed to extend its support to Bangladesh in Rohingya crisis, he claimed that Russia did not fail as it maintained a different approach compared to that of many other countries on the matter.
Russia considered Rohingya to be a bilateral matter between Bangladesh and Myanmar, the ambassador said, adding that his country took a position similar to China on the issue and the matters should be resolved under the agreements signed between the two countries (Bangladesh and Myanmar) in this regard.
Return of the Rohingyas and accountability of the persons engaged in atrocities against them in the Rakhine state are two different things, he said, adding that people should be allowed to return.
Russia doesn’t support the British resolution which is under discussion, if that is put to vote (at the UN Security Council) and if it is adopted there will be no solution in foreseeable future, he said.
Bangladesh-Russia Friendship Society organised the seminar on 47 years of relationship between the two countries at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies conference room in the capital.
Foreign secretary M Shahidul Haque sat as chief guest at the seminar which was presided over by BRFS president Dhaka University former vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique. BRFS’s general secretary and pro-vice chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Professor Dr Shahidullah Sikder, National Press Club president and Daily Jugantor acting editor Saiful Alam and BIISS research fellow Nazmul Arefin also spoke at the function.
