MOSCOW, January 20 (RIA Novosti) – Russia has started the largest naval exercises in the past few decades in the Mediterranean and Black Seas as a civil war in Syria continues to gain momentum.

The drills involve task forces from Russia’s Black Sea, Northern and Baltic fleets, strategic bombers, tactical aircraft, air defense units, paratroopers and naval infantry.

An official statement by the Defense Ministry, issued on Saturday, says the exercises “are held in line with the Russian Armed Forces’ 2013 combat training plan and focus on interoperability of task forces from several fleets while on a mission in a far-off maritime zone.”

The exercises will continue until January 29 and involve over 60 drills, including anti-submarine warfare missions, missile and artillery firing practices.

The training may also include simulated beach landing and convoy escort missions as the task forces have four large landing ships and a variety of auxiliary vessels in their composition.

Some of the exercises are expected to be carried out in the eastern part of the Mediterranean, and, possibly close to the territorial waters of Syria, where rebels have recently stepped up their attacks on army installations in their determined drive to oust President Bashar Al-Assad.

At least 60,000 people have been killed in Syria’s conflict since March 2011, according to latest UN data.

Russia has faced heavy international criticism over its refusal to back UN sanctions against Syria, its last ally in the Arab world, over what it called the pro-rebel bias of some resolutions proposed by Western nations.

Moscow denies it is backing President Bashar Assad and says it is concerned that the Syrian president’s forced departure would only worsen the conflict and lead to the repetition of the so-called ‘Libyan scenario.”

The Russian Navy keeps a naval re-supply and maintenance base in the Syrian port of Tartus to support its operations in the Mediterranean.

But whatever it may try...the power projection that USSR had in its time, it is not the same with Russia...Rather world repsect China in a more substantial way to fill up the vaccum that was left by USSR...So in Syrian Crisis.....rather than Russia, the move from China will create more influence and impact to achieve and solve the crisis in Syria...

It is because Russia has proven to be an unreliable ally against the US hegemony. She hasn't stood by any of her old allies. So far india is the only old ally Russia has not abandoned but even that relation is shaky as the capitalist Russia finds profit from the arms sales more attractive than her old allies.

What is the point in highlighting your statement?
Anyway coming to the point, Russia is welcome to abandon India if they want to do it...Relationship is based on necessities and mutual interests in International diplomacy...If Russia wants to the power bloc again...It has to stand by his old friends in the crisis time.

Thanks to Russia for balancing the power status. While USA declining, Russia is balancing it.

I also find positive that Russia embraces Turkic people and create equal rights. Time to bury our battleaxes came. 1500 years of hostility are enough.

What's the point of not highlighting? If you have the right not to highlight, I have the right to highlight. Learn to accept others as they are and others will accept you as you are. Anyway coming to the point now, Russia will never regain its old strength as she has no principle. Russia simply wants to be accepted as a western nation. No one trusts or respects a figure who doesn't have any principle.

There won't be any earth left and you think it will ease of the pressure on Muslim states ? :hitwall:

Just because their interests clash, doesnt mean a nuclear exchange.

How USA entered A-stan and Middleast? Because Russia was absent.

If you look at WW2 and aftermath Cold War, Muslim States recovered; formed new independent States; formed armies.

Then in 1990 Russia collapsed, causing USA declare wars on Muslims without hesitation.

But today Russia is rising again, forming alliance with Turkic countries, embracing Turkic peoples, in expense of Russian WN fanatics. USA had damaged our region beyond explanation. We need alternative paths. Whether Russia will become an alternative, it remains to be seen.
