Russia said on Dec. 21 that it had completed negotiations with Turkey for the sale of an S-400 air defense missile system, with delivery scheduled for late 2019.

"Practically speaking, the contract is entering the phase of realization," said Vladimir Kozhin, a presidential aide who oversees matters of military cooperation.

"All parameters, all technologies, the entire deal has been agreed."

"All aspects have been resolved over the past few days," Kozhin said.

"The contract will consist of two parts financially: part of it will be paid by Turkey and part through a credit provided by Russia."

"The first deliveries are likely to begin at the end of 2019, beginning of 2020," Kozhin was reported as saying by Russian news agencies.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin and his President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had discussed the deal during Putin's visit to Ankara last week.

The agreement to purchase the latest Russian surface-to-air missile defense batteries is Turkey's most significant deal with a non-NATO military supplier, and comes amid strained relations between Ankara and several Western countries.

The deal has been valued at about $2 billion according to reports.

Turkey's decision to buy the Russian system has raised eyebrows of other NATO members, with the Pentagon saying previously that "generally it's a good idea" to buy equipment that is inter-operable with the military alliance's other systems.

Besides Turkey, Russia is also in talks to sell the system to Saudi Arabia, with Kozhin saying on Dec. 21 that both sides were aiming to finalize the remaining issues on that contract before the end of the year.

  • The long-range (82 miles/135 kilometers) 48N6E3; an evolved model of the 48N6E and 48N6E2 missiles fired by the S-300PMU-2/SA-21 Favorit SAM system. During testing in 2004, an S-400 battery used a 48N6E2 to intercept and destroy a ballistic test target.
  • The short-range 9M96E and 9M96E2 (24/92 miles and 40/120 kilometers) which are roughly equivalent to the U.S. Patriot PAC-3 interceptor. These missiles are clustered in three-round packs that fit the TELs in place of one larger 40N6 or 48N6E3 interceptor.
The S-400 interceptors are extremely maneuverable, and have maximum speeds around Mach 12, making their “no-escape” zone extremely large. Reportedly, 92N6E/Grave Stone engagement radar can track and engage up to six targets simultaneously. Every element of a battery is linked by a wireless data link network that can be augmented by hard-wired cables if time and the operational situation allow. In addition, the S-400 can also fire the missiles used by the S-300/SA-10/20 family of SAM systems, along with exchanging data with their sensors.

Two years is very long especially when tensions in and around Turkey are very high.
If Turkey leaves NATO, Russia would give her own SAM to them. Like what we received from Russia

Turkey has some wrong calculations, i love Turkish nation but the leadership of Turkey has some political mistakes. However these mistakes are often found in every Islamic country

They should raze Israeli embassy in Ankara.

Can someone educate me why Turkey needs S-400 while they enjoy chapter 5 defense umbrella from NATO ?

Your answer is in NATO's coup against elected Turkish government. Are you that naive to trust US and NATO trouble makers that supported and armed PKK/YPG?

Then why is Turkey still a member of the NATO if it does not trust the alliance?

Turkey and Saudia are opposed to Russia in the Syrian war. So does Russia intend to finish the Syrian war by 2019??

Grandmaster Putin has something else in his mind. The smartest statesman the world has ever seen.

Umbrella ? Trigger in the hand of coordinators in Ramstein Germany .
Power without control is no Power.

Then Turkey really should resign from NATO to get the full control of the defense apparatus. They can then enjoy total power. What is holding them back from doing it ?
