NEW YORK, Mar 31 (APP): Russia supports the Taliban’s demand for foreign troops to leave Afghanistan, President Vladimir Putin’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan has said, as he criticized agreements that allow U.S. and NATO forces to remain for the long term in the war-torn country.
“Of course it’s justified for the Taliban to oppose the foreign military
presence”, Zamir Kabulov, the envoy, said in an interview in Moscow with Bloomberg, an American financial service.
“Who’s in favour? Name me one neighbouring state that supports it,” he was quoted as saying.
Russia and the U.S. are increasingly at odds over Afghanistan, Bloomberg noted.
Officials in Moscow disclosed at the end of last year that they have
been having contacts with the Taliban that ruled the country from 1996 to 2001, when it was overthrown in a U.S.-led invasion.
U.S. generals have accused Russia of supplying weapons to the Taliban,
which is waging an expanding insurgency against the Afghan government. Moscow has rejected the allegation.
Around 13,000 U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops are
currently in Afghanistan, and the top U.S. commander is pushing for several thousand more to help reverse the course of the war. The U.S. estimates that only 57 percent of Afghanistan is under government control, a 15 percent decrease since November 2015.
In the interview, Kabulov accused the U.S. of sabotaging Russian efforts to help end the Afghan war by boycotting a peace conference on Afghanistan planned for mid-April in Moscow.
He blamed the U.S. decision on a fit of pique that Russia is taking the lead, and suggested that the military establishment in Washington is undermining Trump’s campaign pledge to cooperate with Russia in fighting terrorism.
“The U.S. won’t tell us and others what to do in Afghanistan,” he said.
While some Taliban elements are in a tactical alliance with Islamic State, the bulk of the movement and its leadership is determined to fight the terrorist group, the Russian diplomat said.
This means the Taliban has “common interests” with Russia, Kabulov said.
“They have given up global jihad and have become a national force,” he added.

how come China and Pakistan in picture?

whatever Russia or US, India will work with them and fight against Taliban & terrorists.

Russia is trusted friend of India and we have mutual understanding with US.

India knows how to maintain relationship with both powers.

u cant say same thing about Pakistan. only needs to look history...

India and allies losing .

if Russia will come in Afghanistan then surely, India and Russia alliance will work together.

Till now, Pakistan, Russia and China alliance present in Pakistan news and Pakistan. Russia have good relationship with China but that is for different purpose not against India. it could be against US, trade and business are most important factors.

Great,,, seems like Pakistan played it cards wisely and US very un-wisely put wrong bet on India ...

If US had to leave Afghanistan than this region will be much more secure and atleast central asia will be without any significant nato presence ...

However, Pakistan still need to play wisely as there is no need to have direct confrontation with uncle SAM ... I am sure uncle Sam will put all this on Pakistan without acknowledging that its them who preferred India at every forum ... So now its time for intelligent diplomacy ...

How the tables have turned. The same Taliban that was used by the Americans to disintegrate Russia is now being used to bleed the Americans. No doubt, you reap what you sow.

As for Pakistan, our alliance and interests are directly linked to China and Russia. These are our immediate neighbors. I'm sure the Americans will manage with their beloved India.

LOL we have already seen how much development and prosperity India and the US brought to Afghanistan. LMAO a failed narcotic state where Taliban call the shots. Your Afghan brothers and sisters are dying to stay in Pakistan. Goes to show how much of a success your Afghan campaign has been. India has been tried and tested. It has failed miserably.

LOL Russia isn't even going to pi$$ over India. You are irrelevant. You hold zero value in the Afghan scenario. Stop pretending to be important.

Russia and China are going to do everything necessary to reclaim Afghanistan. It is their backyard and they are the rightful owners. India serves zero purpose in any of this. You don't even share a border with Afghanistan LMAO Abdullah ki shaadi me India hanuman begana. What purpose could India possibly serve apart from setting up terror factories to sponsor terror across the border in Pakistan? That is where your influence begins and ends.

Having said that, now you will see who has bet on the winning horse. Taliban India's mortal enemy or the bacha baaz Northern Alliance.

We are going to layback and watch it all unfold.

India gambled everything with respect to its Afghan policy with the hope that the super-power America, the ex-patron of its nemesis Pakistan, will help it succeed where no-one has succeeded before. Alas, they are mistaken. America has failed and so will India. However, America can walk away, but India is stuck here through geography. India now finds itself in the unimaginable position where two of its great allies in the region -Iran and Russia stand opposed to it. That is a foreign policy cluster f***k. As things happen, Pakistan finds itself on the side of the big powers in the region ie China, Russia and Iran. Modi really is the best foreign minister we ever had.

Russia Backs Afghan Taliban Demand to Withdraw Foreign Troops

Russia and the U.S. are increasingly at odds over Afghanistan. Officials in Moscow disclosed at the end of last year that they’ve been having contacts with the fundamentalist Islamic movement that ruled the country from 1996 to 2001, when it was overthrown in a U.S.-led invasion to destroy terrorist training camps run by Osama Bin Laden. U.S. generals say Russia may be supplying weapons to the Taliban, which is waging an expanding insurgency against the pro-Western Afghan government. Moscow denies the allegation.

Around 13,000 U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops are currently in Afghanistan, and the top U.S. commander is pushing for several thousand more to help reverse the course of the war. The U.S. estimates that only 57 percent of Afghanistan is under government control, a 15 percent decrease since November 2015.

The foreign forces are in Afghanistan as part of security accords signed under President Ashraf Ghani a day after he took office in September 2014. They allow for U.S. and NATO troops to stay through the end of 2024 and beyond, mending a relationship that had soured under his predecessor Hamid Karzai.

Peace Talks
The tensions over Afghanistan come as Russia’s hopes for better ties with new U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration fade amid continuing disputes over alleged Kremlin interference in last year’s election campaign. The two powers are also competing in Syria and Libya as Russia seeks to restore its influence in the Middle East.

Kabulov accused the U.S. of sabotaging Russian efforts to help end the Afghan war by boycotting a Moscow meeting planned for mid-April between Afghanistan and outside powers. Russia, where memories remain fresh of the Soviet Union’s Afghanistan experience 28 years after the Red Army’s humiliating withdrawal in 1989, says it’s offering to host peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

Kabulov blamed the U.S. decision on a fit of pique that Russia is taking the lead, and suggested that the military establishment in Washington is undermining Trump’s campaign pledge to cooperate with Russia in fighting terrorism. “The U.S. won’t tell us and others what to do in Afghanistan,” he said.

‘Global Jihad’
While some Taliban elements are in a tactical alliance with Islamic State, the “bulk” of the movement and its leadership is determined to fight the terrorist group, the Russian diplomat said. This means the Taliban has “common interests” with Russia, said Kabulov.

“They have given up global jihad and have become a national force,” he said.

The Soviet Union lost 15,000 soldiers during a disastrous 10-year occupation of Afghanistan. Russia criticizes the U.S.-led military campaign there as a total failure, though Kabulov warned in January that an immediate withdrawal of American troops would lead to the “collapse” of the Afghan state.

Russia’s acting partly because it wants to counter the threat from Islamic State as the jihadists gain ground in Afghanistan amid the widening conflict, said Petr Topychkanov, an analyst at the Carnegie Moscow Center. But it also “views American bases in Afghanistan as a threat to its interests” and is maneuvering to maximize its influence by keeping channels of communication with all sides, he said.

“It doesn’t matter for Russia if the Afghan state is a democratic or Islamist one,” Topychkanov said.
