Russia assures India of support on UNSC permanent seat bid - The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Russia has assured its support to India for permanent membership in the UN Security Council, days after it along with the US and China refused to contribute to the text for negotiations on reforms which was seen as a move to thwart India's bid for the seat.

The assurance was made by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov during a meeting with Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs Sujata Mehta yesterday when the two sides held wide-ranging discussions on the agenda of the 70th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly.

"Special attention was paid to the issue of the United Nations Security Council reform. The parties exchanged opinions on the main aspects of intergovernmental negotiation process considering the current various options for the increase in the UNSCmembership.

"The Russian side reaffirmed the readiness to support the Indian candidature for the United Nations Security Council permanent membership in case of decision to extend it in both categories - permanent and non-permanent members," a release from the Russian embassy said today.

The meeting comes two days after the UN General Assembly adopted a negotiating text by consensus for the long-pending Security Council reforms, boosting India's bid for apermanent seat in the revamped world body.

However, the US, China and Russia did not contribute to the text, a move which was seen as an attempt to thwart India's bid. Though the US and Russia have been supporting India's bid, China has been against any expansion of the Security Council.

India and Russia also discussed mutual priorities for the UNGA 70th session and stated proximity of approaches of the two countries on many issues being discussed within the framework of the UN bodies.

In the context of the analysis of regional crises in the Middle East and the North Africa, special importance was given to the task to widely consolidate and coordinate international counter-terrorism efforts on a firm international legal basis under the UN aegis, the release said.

The two sides expressed common view on the significance of implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and formulation of main parameters to hold the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016.

Do they ? Apart from pacifying statements to Indian politicians and diplomats time to time were there any concrete support ? Btw why ignore China ? Chinese leaders themselves have been issuing statements supporting India's "Inclusion" to the UNSC, Though non of the P5 have said in what capacity

Sorry mate but demands for UNSC reforms having been going on for decades.. With only statements being issued.. Nothing will change when it comes to the P5, Neither India, Japan, Brazil or Germany will have a say in it.. The UNSC P5 is a body of circumstances, Not club of memberships.. It wont change, As long as the UN survives

Only thing you will see are pacifying diplomatic statements from time to time and the Indian media going hissy fits over them

India definitely needs tons of assurances, guidances, sympathies and emotional therapy to every countries, that's bit annoying.

ok dear.......... i will pass on your judgment to Indian govt :pop:

Apart from Russia and France , i didn't have confidence on any other P5 member specially China and US. They are just passing the time and at time of voting they will back-off. But eventually they has to give us ,but how many years in this "Eventually" that's the crucial question.

It's not a case of being judgmental.. It's more about being factual.. It's nothing new, Every time a diplomat from the P5 states support to a Indian politician, The media goes ga ga and there are a dozen threads on here

If you dont realize how a body like P5 work.. There is bound to be disappointments

Exactly.. And in what capacity, If they "eventually" do ? None of the P5 mentions any indication that inclusion means..

what will be the face of UN after reforms only time will tell because this is very slow process and India too needs time of at least 10 yrs to stake its rightful claim. What will be the criteria for reforms are all premature at this stage to anticipate
