Russia and Iran may enter free trade zone agreement in spring

MOSCOW, March 6. /TASS/. Russia and Iran can sign the document that is expected to become a blueprint for free trade between Iran and the EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union) countries in May, Russia’s Energy Minister and co-head of the Russian-Iranian intergovernmental commission Alexander Novak said at a meeting of the commission on Tuesday.

"The move to enter into a temporary agreement making for a free trade zone to be set up between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union, which is currently at an advanced stage, will obviously trigger further development of our bilateral trade and expansion of investment cooperation," he said, adding that he hopes "the document will be signed in May."

Earlier Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei said in an interview with TASS that the talks on a free trade zone to be established between the Eurasian Economic Union and Iran are close to completion.

The work on a free trade zone between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union began in 2015, though the signing has been repeatedly postponed.

“We talked about the possibility of Sukhoi SuperJet-100 purchases by our Iranian partners and outlined a plan of how this can be put it into practice,” he said.

Novak added that the sides have also agreed to deliver various other Russian-made vehicles to Iran. “Today, we discussed the deliveries of rail carriages. We have already delivered 1,200 of them and plan to deliver about 3,000 in 2018,” he said.

According to the minister, additional sales of Russian-made buses, as well as trucks produced by Russia’s KAMAZ and UAZ plants are being discussed. The two countries have been also negotiating local production of the SSJ 100 airliner to replace Iran's ageing fleet on regional routes.

Iran has a shortage of modern aircraft due to decades-long sanctions imposed by Western countries. Local airlines are looking for reliable regional jets, and the Russian models could bolster the country’s aviation industry.

Sukhoi SuperJet-100 is Russia’s newest twin-engine regional passenger aircraft, which began operating commercially in 2011. More than 60 aircraft are in service with airlines in Laos, Mexico, and Russia.

I do not know where they got number - 60 aircrafts. Wikipedia claims that 125 aircrafts are in service. And they forgot about Irish company CityJet.

It has lesser numbers in foreign airlines for now. I guess this is just some obsolete number. I also think Iran could be interested in Russian MC-21 and Russian-Chinese CR-929

Why,for what reason?

Unlike our trade with Turkey we don't have complete trade pyramid with Russia that's the main problem .if we want to move our relationships with Russia to the next level it's necessary to build strong baseline first .
