ChinaToday, I would not trust Russia to help China in a war. Russia has been supplying military equipment with its business to China's regional rivals that are currently challenging China's sovereignty such as India and Vietnam. Let's not forget that it was historically because of Russia that China permanently lost Outer Mongolia and Outer Manchuria, making China smaller from its biggest size in history. I would not consider that forgivable.

So to my Chinese colleagues, keep a rear eye on Russia... ^^

If Russia were to weaken and break up from ongoing NATO military attacks. I recommend China to immediately take the opportunity to control some of the lost broken pieces of Russia.

Exactly! Soviet Union collapsed because China joined the US camp and steadily wore it down in border skirmishes, conflicts with Vietnam and support for the mujaheddin in Afghanistan.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, China could have taken an aggressive posture against Russia to try to take back some territory. Instead, China showed restraint and the willingness to forge a cooperative relationship with Russia (in the 90's much weakened compared to USSR).

After much much wrangling, we managed to get a favorable settlement of 100% of the border. It is beneficial for us to have Russia around in East Asia as a buffer against Japan. We also gained enormously from former USSR's military technology and infrastructure.

Outer Mongolia is a big desert. One day it will return to China, but it is so low priority that everything else -- Taiwan, East China Sea, South China Sea and Southern Tibet -- must be restored before we bother with Outer Mongolia.

Russia and China are friends at least until USA is defeated. Medvedev is actually pro-Western and would have sided with the West to contain China. But fortunately, Putin is still in control and he realizes that after China, Russia would be next. China should be grateful that such a powerful neighbor as Russia has congruent interest as ours to jointly counter USA hegemony.

In the year 2025, you can talk to my kids about how India is a super power. I prefer not to live in the future. Stuff like LCA would be ready doesn't mean anything to me if its not about today or soon. You can talk about India being a superpower in 15 more year. But today, India has about as much political weight as South Africa or Mexico internationally. As for the term BRIC nation, what role does India play in it. Is it to increase the poverty rate of that group of nations?

Whatever we are, I thinks Indians can't match the legacy of Great Leap Forward and Cultural revolution. not even .001%.

Looking at china's recent bullying its small neighbours, it has raised concerns not only in India but in Russia and US too.

Russia, India and NATO should work together to put a leash on this bad bully called china. remaining ASEAN countries can scavenge on the remains of china.

The biggest benefit russia has is that he a brother to india.... America won't ever take on russia as it will turn india against him.... Before usa took on russia because india was enemy of usa.... India is the link that will bring russia and america together.... Just like it braught israel and russia together.... Recently russia warned china that if he try to be over smart then he has to face russian nuke fury.... And after warning russia deployed nuke missiles on russian china border. Just after that russian president came in india and had secret deal.... all he had reveald that if one of his friendly neighbour try to war with india than it would invite russia to launch war against them.... All major powers are against cheap junk china....

Both Russia and China were happy to push Libya under the bus. It is too early to say that a new alliance is developing.

For India it makes sense not to identify too closely with any global power bloc, that will not help us.

At present growth rates India will be 2nd largest economy by mid-century. So in the long term India will be an independent global power center.

In the short term, our interests are best served by being regarded by every non-South Asian power as the most important nation in South Asia.

Militarization of the SCO in 2012-2013

The cowardly attack on Pakistani soldiers will decisively strengthen the anti-US faction in Pakistan against the pro-US faction. A major deterioration of the relationship between Pakistan and the US due to the attack will likely lead China and Russia to agree to militarize the SCO in the next 1 or 2 years. China and Russia have been unable to agree on militarization for the past few years, but now many factor push toward militarization of the SCO:

1) In March 2012, China will be undergoing a leadership change. A pro-military, hardline leadership is coming to power in Beijing.

2) Russia has a serious conflict with the US over missile defense in Eastern Europe and Syria. Russia's biggest dream is to trap and wound the US in Afghanistan the same way the US trapped and wounded USSR in Afghanistan in 1980's.

3) The US is acting more and more aggressively around the world, like taking military action against Libya.

4) Popular unrest in the Middle East is destabilizing the whole region.

The most likely formula is to only let Pakistan into SCO, but not india (as Russia prefers but not China), because india wants to "remain neutral" but secretly favor USA against Russia / China.

Once the alliance members are decided, then the SCO can strangle supplies to Afghanistan and hand the US a devastating defeat. The US will try to attack Pakistan by air and sea to save its troops in Afghanistan but China and Russia can send military equipment and advisors to counter them. Within a few months, all the coalition troops Afghanistan should have surrendered to the Taliban.

So it's very likely we'll see a final military showdown between SCO (composing of China, Russian, Central Asian -stans and Pakistan) versus US military with Afghanistan, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and possibly even Syria or Iran as theaters of war before 2015.
