Had one in the university, never tried to learn to use it though :p:

Pak authorities have been remote booting smartphones since 2011
You are late to the party

no rtl sdr is software defined radio - is a excellent and cheap device to listen in to police, authorities, aircraft, military, etc. the dongle and antenna cost about 8 dollar or 6 quid and sdr sharp spoftware is free to download off the net.

lol you can plug it into a android phone and download andriod version of the sdr and listen on the go.

If the Pak authorities are remote booting smartphone since 2011, they are late to the party. P.s remote booting of equipment was already happening much before that time period in Pakistan.

He wasn't implying that Pak authorities did it first. Don't get your knickers in a twist.

apologies, if I was getting crazy. I was just implying that pak auth were remote booting mobiles pre 2011. I was just doodling around for IT or IS stuff here and just saw the comment by senior member.

this is very much old news. i made one for ham radio - softrock kit. you must be licenced for that hobby.

I worked on SDR 20 years back on tactical manpacks.

I am referring to sdrs and listening in(if that was your original q)
Trust me, I was at the forefront of anything SDr in Pakistan for a while

Question is, is it a threat for sponsored terrorists to use and target our LE?

2011 is what I know of, could be earlier.
But I doubt it as the building next to fauji foundation in rwp deployed such imported systems around the time of swat op

Sir, The public communication network that is used in local mobile is not encrypted, even to the standards followed in EU or US(that is the standard practice followed in the world)(fault of the regulator) this is breakable within 2 to 3 seconds with a basic laptop but some skill is required, which i doubt the terrorist will have in abundance. So, it could be threat for LE, as public comms are not secured event to the basic level.

Sir g, remote booting either from mobiles or laptop was in play pre 01(not in organized manner). Post 2001, it had to be made organized due to changing nature of communications. The Information security dept made in 2001 in MCS can be taken as a reference.

You are referring to early devices and not smartphones

Encryption or no encryption
Remote booting was not there until 2001 simply because most cell phones did not have networked processors
