Islam has historical baggage in India. It would not gain converts even with bribes. In this field, Christians had an advantage as they did not had that baggage thus having high success rate.
Note that even Christian evangelists have not succeeded in getting large number of converts outside SC/ST category.
Regarding second point, yes it is in bad taste and provocative.
Historical baggage only according to the Hindutva brigade. Anyway even if that is the case if Islam can attract converts in the US (which has the most modern day "baggage" with Muslims) without bribes just fine I think missionaries can do a lot in India with the added power to hand out rations to the poor. Not to mention the Zakir Naiks and his types who have converted large numbers just by out talking people lol (not a fan). Ideally the sufi groups should lead the charge and although they do convert people they tend not to actively preach in places like India where communal tensions run high however if these rss ceremonies keep occurring they will naturally react by sending out dais as they have historically always have been at the forefront of combating encroachments by other religions.
Anyway rss should not have publicized these proceeding and kept things silent. Most Muslim missionary groups were not aware of their activity but I am sure the 2 lakh number since 2003 will ring some wake up bells.
But Salafis are mostly converting non-Salfi muslims into Salafi. Their conversion activities among non-muslims are miniscule.
Incorrect most non-Muslims turning to Islam are directly due to salafi missionary activities, hence why the tendency for some of these new converts to go over the top and end up in places like Syria unfortunately.
