RSS attacked over terrorism
3 Nov, 2010, 04.07AM IST,ET Bureau
NEW DELHI: Shedding its reticence, Congress used the chargesheeting of RSS leader Indresh Kumar and others in the Ajmer blast case to launch an offensive against the organisation, equating it with terror, at the day-long session of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) on Tuesday.
A short resolution adopted at the session said: Recent revelations through detailed investigations have exposed the true character of RSS and its sister organisations. Investigations indicate the involvement of its members in terrorist activities.
Vowing to continue its fight against communal forces, the party adopted the statement: The Indian National Congress has always been in the forefront of the ideological and political battle against communalism of all types. It reiterates its commitment to upholding the secular values that have been the defining characteristic of our composite culture through centuries...communal and terrorist elements, whichever source they may originate from, that aim at destroying our national fabric will be fought at any cost. The Indian National Congress will fight against all such sources that spread religious hatred, prejudice and bigotry and that seek to polarise our people along religious lines.
While Congress has been traditionally against RSS, blaming the divisive and communal politics played by it for many of the ills plaguing the country, including the demolition of the Babri monument in 1992, this is the first time it has equated it with terrorism. The development is certain to ratchet up the partys confrontation with the Sangh Parivar, including BJP.
Senior Congress leader and finance minister Pranab Mukherjee read out the statement at the session and cited an interview of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru to a French journalist to underline the partys commitment to secularism. In 1958, a French journalist had asked prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru what his biggest challenge in independent India was. Our prime minister replied that establishing the spirit of secularism...was his biggest challenge. We remain committed to that ideal...In case of RSS...their recent links with terrorist activities, which have been exposed recently, should be brought out.
Over the past one year, Congress has been consistently trying to corner RSS and other organisations like Abhinav Bharat for their alleged role in terror cases. Home minister P Chidambaram had put the issue firmly on the table in August while addressing a conference of police chiefs. He had called it a new phenomenon of saffron terror. While Congress had distanced itself from the usage of the term saffron, the party put the focus on RSS.
