hey bro , one query . why did the navy go for only 3 shivalik class ships ? i mean these ships look quite capable and deadly so why didnt they go for more ships ? i think its a shame only 3 were ever produced .P-17A quite clearly bro, a more refined Shvilaik:
Understating the capability helps us in keeping things under the radar
Hence
a 3000 Ton Kamorta is classified a Corvette
a 6200 Ton Shivalik is classified a Frigate
a 8000 Ton Kolkata is classified a Destroyer
Had these ships been inducted in yr 2001, then
Kamorta would have been called a Frigate,
Shivalik would have been called a Destroyer and Kolkata would have been called a Cruiser
This is how the IN has historically acted- small peicemeal orders normally of 3 units at a time. Now the IN is looking to expand and funds are more readily available the IN will change this practice and you can see this with the P-17A- 7 ships ordered from the outset.hey bro , one query . why did the navy go for only 3 shivalik class ships ? i mean these ships look quite capable and deadly so why didnt they go for more ships ? i think its a shame only 3 were ever produced .

3000 Ton Kamorta is classified a Corvette because it is made just for ASW.
So if Kamorta would have built in 1980 then also it would have been called corvette
I think the Kamorta class are first in line for the Maitri, fitting the BARAK-8 seems needless especially as the Kamotra doesn't have an air seach radar powerful enough to exploit the full envelope of the BARAK-8 such as the MF-STAR on larger IN vessels.Kamotra class will be fitted with a Either a PDMS or barak 8... If fitted with barak 8.. It's will be having secondary AD capability and primary ASW capability....
Will Kamorta become Anti-Aircraft ship after installing Barak(as Barak is PDMS)?Kamotra class will be fitted with a Either a PDMS or barak 8... If fitted with barak 8.. It's will be having secondary AD capability and primary ASW capability....
IN..historically categorise it's ships on basis of weapon load... Like...
Delhi class is about 6200 tons... But carry 16 ASM and 32 barak 1 and 48 shitl SAM..
While 6100 tons shivalik carry only 8 ASM and 24 shitl SAM and 32 barak1....
Despite same tonnage Delhi class is destroyer and shivalik class is frigate... It's just the weapon load in IN terminology..

i see . i feel they should have continued with the production of shivalik class ships while the design for project 17a is being completed . i think thats what the chinese are doing . not an expert , just my 2 rupaiyaThis is how the IN has historically acted- small peicemeal orders normally of 3 units at a time. The delay was not about the P-17A's design not being complete, it had been by the time the P-17s were in service. The delay between the P-17 and P-17A is entirely down to the GoI stalling the proposal, the IN had been pitching the P-17A for years ever since the P-17s entered service but it was only in early 2015 under the current GoI that the offical clearance was given. Why the previous DM/GoI decided to forgo such a decsion I cannot fathom but alas.i see . i feel they should have continued with the production of shivalik class ships while the design for project 17a is being completed . i think thats what the chinese are doing . not an expert , just my 2 rupaiya
so when can we expect to see the first ship of project 17a ?

red tape and the damn "chalta hai" attitude has cost us quite dearly . hopefully this modi govt can bring in some change and no more delays this time .The delay was not about the P-17A's design not being complete, it had been by the time the P-17s were in service. Work on the first P-17A will begin in 2017 with delivery 60 months after that (starting 2022) and 1 P-17A will be inducted every year after that until all 7 are in service. 60 months for a 7,000 ton (aprox) advanced frigate is a very respectable build time.
The IN has learnt their lesson and you can note that the construction of the P-15Bs began before the first P-15A had even been inducted.
