Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has a message for President Donald Trump: Tehran will remain in the Iran nuclear deal — for now.

But he added a dire warning: If Iran and other countries in the agreement can’t agree on a way forward, Iran might start enriching uranium at uncapped levels.

Rouhani asked his top diplomat to work with countries that signed on to the Iran deal — including France, Germany, Russia, and China — to figure out how to proceed without the United States. But he put a time limit on those talks, which means Iran may put itself on the path toward a nuclear weapon in mere weeks.

“I have directed the Atomic Energy Agency to prepare for the next steps, if necessary, to begin our own industrial enrichment without restriction,” Rouhani said in a statement on Tuesday, just minutes after Trump withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal. “We will wait several weeks before acting on this decision. We will be consulting with friends, our allies and members who have signed on to the agreement. Everything depends on our national interests. If our nation’s interests are attained in the end, we will continue the process.”

That’s bad news for Trump, who promised he would never allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon. The Iran deal capped Tehran’s uranium enrichment at around 4 percent. Now, it seems, Iran will go much higher, but it’s unclear if it will enrich uranium at the 90 percent level required for a nuclear weapon.

Still, it seems like Trump’s gambit to deter Iran from getting a nuke may be failing just minutes after he decided to scrap the Iran deal.

How other world leaders reacted to Trump’s decision
Trump has received mixed reactions to his Iran deal announcement.

Let’s start with the negative. Former President Barack Obama, who spearheaded the Iran deal, called Trump’s decision “misguided” in a Tuesday Facebook post, adding that “Walking away from the JCPOA [the formal acronym for the Iran deal] turns our back on America’s closest allies.”

It makes sense that Obama would slam Trump’s withdrawal. After all, the Iran deal was one of Obama’s signature foreign policy accomplishments.

But America’s allies are also upset with Trump, according to French President Emmanuel Macron.

France, Germany, and the UK regret the U.S. decision to leave the JCPOA. The nuclear non-proliferation regime is at stake.

Trump does have leaders in his corner, though. No one seemed happier than Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called Trump’s decision “bold” in a Tuesday tweet and “brave and correct” in a speech he gave after the US president’s announcement.

Just a week earlier, Netanyahu had lobbied Trump to leave the deal with a presentation that concluded Iran lied about its desire to build a nuke. Iran officially denies that claim.

Thank you President Trump for your bold decision and your commitment to prevent Iran from ever getting nuclear weapons. @realDonaldTrump pic.twitter.com/F8lldwqhID

The question now is if Iran will actually follow through on its enrichment threat in the long term. If it does, Trump may hear much more from world leaders about how to handle Iran.

Hassan Rouhani knew about Trump decision in advance and he just make speech several minutes after Trump and said "Iran will stay in deal" ... his goal was to bind hand of Iran leader and the people who are against this did DEAD deal ...

IMO Hassan Rouhani and his party are traitors and their ultimate goal is not just to topple Islamic Republic but to divide Iran to smaller countries ....

I have enough respect for Rouhani and his partners to not calling them as "Naive" ...

I won't talk about this deal because I don't have any power ....
seeing some traitors are in power and lead your country to total destruction is enough to break your heart and make you depressed ....

US is acting more like an Israeli bitch than the other way round. The only way forward is for Iran to ultimately acquire nuclear weapons. That will end this saga of not letting Iran acquire nuclear weapons once and for all. After that neither Israel nor US will ever try to attack or undermine Iran. Yes proxy wars will continue but this debate of using force to deter Iran will be buried for good.

I can understand your sentiment about Rouhani and Co. being possible traitors but where is the notion that they want to divide Iran into smaller countries coming from?

It was plan of their British/Yahnkee masters even before fall of Pahlavi dynasty ... After Ottoman empire , it was Iran turn to divide to smaller countries but Qajar and Pahlavi and IR manage to resist it but now , Hassan Rouhani is going to destroy Iran and prepare it fore being divide ...

everything is clear as daylight ... when 3 years ago I said that USA will leave the deal when Iran completely stopped his nuclear program and gave all her info to the west , I had no evidence , but all signs was showing this day ( yesterday ) would happen and USA will leave the deal ...

. . .
Europe won't withdraw from the deal but no european bank or company will make a deal with Iran and Europe will say : " These are private banks and Companies , we can't force them to make deal with you " ....
now , head of our so called Parliament Larijani ( which I hate him more than Rouhani ) is repeating what Rouhani said last night ; " we will give some weeks to Europe to honor their deal " ....

Traitors ... Traitors everywhere ....

It isn't influence, they outright control the USA's Middle East policy.

Unfortunately, the US is encircling Iran and it will try attacking Iran with the help of Israel and Saudi Arabia. US forces are present in A-stan and Iraq, and this is going to be problematic for Iran.

.
How is the US encircling Iran when Iran's presence has amplified throughout the Levant while the US has lost key former allies like Turkey and Qatar? Iraq is filled to the brim with Iranian commanded PMUs, almost 60k of them IIRC.

. .
No, it won't be. If it were to be attacked it'd have happened long back. It outweighs the US in Iraq, the US in Afghanistan is a joke and there's the 'small' issue of Iran being able to shut the Straits of Hormuz if attacked. Around 30-35% of the world's oil gets shipped via that route.

. .
Which part of it? It's fact. Iran's location is pretty sound. Their strategy's also good in terms of keeping the battle to Israel's frontiers and not their own.

Yeah didn't fall in line with the contemporary Pakistani narrative of surrender and defeat so that must mean it's stupid.
