Roger Federer creates international incident by holding up 'India' jersey

Blasphemy... How could Roger Federer do this? He should have been aware of India - Pakistan cricket rivalry. ;)

Btw..this reminds of that episode when some Indian cricket fans kicked a fuss about Maria Sharapova for not knowing who Sachin Tendulkar was. C'mon..cricket & Indo-Pak rivalry is alien to these guys. How can one get so emotional & touchy about these things?

Though seemingly an innocuous gesture by the tennis star, who spent some time playing exhibitions in India last year, the photo has caused a stir amongst some Pakistanis, who are cutting ties with Federer for even daring to hold the enemy’s clothing in front of him with a “huh, what’s this” look on his face.

The Express Tribune published an amazing, heartfelt personal letter from a PhD student named Sulaiman Ijaz who identifies as one of Federer’s biggest fans and even thanks Federer and his wife, Mirka, for helping his marriage. At first, this read like satire. But Ijaz was completely genuine

He writes that he sincerely understands why Federer would back India — the tennis player is hitting an untapped market in India. But, Ijaz, writes, the photo a negative effect in Pakistan:

After you posted the picture, I did an informal poll of the dozen biggest Pakistani Roger fans I know. All very serious fans, mind you. Two of them were not bothered by the picture. But 10 of the 12 felt seriously hurt or betrayed. Six of those 10 said you had acted “like a sell-out” and have stopped supporting you altogether.

The writer continues by suggesting holding up an India jersey was a sign that fans in Pakistan are “financially expendable,” which is a bit of a stretch, even for a PhD student at Cambridge. Sometimes an India rugby shirt is just an India rugby shirt, you know?

This morning I deleted over a hundred Roger posts from my Facebook wall as well as the photo collection I had painstakingly put together. I also donated my RF cap and my collection of books about you.

I will always respect you, love your game and wish you success. I just won’t be along with you for the ride.

It was as classy a Dear John Roger letter as there gets. I’d say Ijaz overreacted but, hey, I can’t tell a wicket from a bowler, so what do I know about cricket? The biggest rivalry I have is with my neighbor who keeps confusing our recycling bins.

What I *do* know is that while we think Auburn-Alabama is a rivalry, which is a rivalry because there’s little else to do in Alabama; college kids enjoy getting drunk and hurling insults at people; men wearing Vineyard Vines and women in pearls revel in debating which tailgate scene is better and everyone loves toilet papering things. But they’ve got NOTHIN’ on India-Pakistan. These countries are hardcore about their cricket and will just — SNIP — cut Roger Federer out of their lives. Dude even donated his hat, which, I mean — it’s nice to donate the books, but why not just throw the hat in the trash, because that’s pretty gross.

Federer backed the right side (if he was backing any side at all) as India thrashed Pakistan in their opener, 300/7 (50) to 224/10 (47), which apparently are NOT just gibberish numbers. Over 1.5 billion people reportedly watched the match, which isn’t gibberish either. The World Cup continues through the end of March, so Pakistan will have a chance at revenge and to show Roger Federer he was wrong for ever holding up a blue jersey. The nerve.

the news was printed on 17 Feb. and Indian is reporting it on 19 Feb. promoting the title 'international incident...'
I'm sure that this news cannot be internationalized beyond this thread, no matter how hard Indians try.

Are you daft or something ? except for replying in this thread ,Indians or India have nothing to do with this issue ,except perhaps, than laugh at naivety of some gullible pakistanis. Roger Fedrer held an Indian shirt and some stupid from pakland (aparently cambridge phd scholar) felt the need to rant about in a news website , as if pakistan is the only nation, India is playing against. This was picked by another news website and titled it as an "international incident" not by an Indian. Also reported by washington post .

Roger Federer sorry for upsetting people by holding Indian Cricket team shirt

Federer apolgizes.

Tennis: The 17-time Grand Slam champion said it was more of a Nike shirt

Tennis: Former World No.1 and 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has apologised to those who got hurt after watching his photo in which he is holding the Indian Cricket Team shirt.

The Swiss Tennis maestro hurt some Pakistanis Cricket Team fans, as he posted a photo holding Indian Cricket Team shirt on the day when India and Pakistan met in the opening game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. Federer posted the photo and wrote, "Dressing up for a Gentleman's game today. #BleedBlue."

But now he has clarified that it was more of a Nike shirt instead of Indian Cricket team shirt, as Nike also sponsors Federer. He said had been to Indian recently and met few Indian players so they presented him the shirt.

He said sorry if he had sparked any fire and told that he is fan of the South African Cricket team and everybody knows that. Federer's mother is South African so he has spent some years there and played Cricket there.

Federer also told that he does not watch Cricket in Europe or America and it depends on where he is in the world. He said he watches some Cricket if he is in Australia or UAE. He is currently in Dubai to play ATP 500 tournament.

Roger Federer apologizes for holding up "India" cricket jersey, thus diffusing international incident

Remember last week when Roger Federer held up an Indian cricket jersey before the Cricket World Cup and it caused a stir in Pakistan because how dare Roger Federer choose sides in a sporting event of all things? Well, because everybody is far too sensitive these days and Pakistan got crushed by India and lost its second game too, Federer had to issue an apology on Sunday before playing a tournament in Dubai. In the apology, Federer blamed it all on Nike.

“It was more of a Nike thing to be quite honest. It was a Nike campaign they had because I met some of the Indian players and I had just spent some time in India so they presented the shirt to me.”
afp_537825404_70830398.jpg

It was a Nike campaign? Ugh. So the main takeaway from this is that nothing is spontaneous anymore and the Tom Brady Facebook page you laugh at is probably run by four Wharton MBAs and a bunch of writers plucked from Harvard’s National Lampoon.

The “controversy” only took off after a Pakistani PhD student at Cambridge wrote a blistering editorial saying how Federer was basically dead to him after holding up the blue jersey. Because of that, Federer had to give a phony apology. If celebrities can’t even show rooting interest, then we should all just stop talking for fear of offending anybody.

Federer also talked a little more at length about the ongoing World Cup.

“I support South Africa, and everybody knows that. The idea wasn’t to spark any fire and I’m sorry if it did that.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. As a West Indies rooter myself, I’m personally hurt and offended by Federer’s declaration of support for South Africa. That gentlemen you hear shouting “Baba Booey” every time you serve at the U.S. Open later this year will be me, kind sir, as I can no longer back a man who supports those wicked Proteas.

Roger Federer caught up in India-Pakistan cricket rivalry - Apologises to Pakistani Fans

Roger Federer has apologised for getting caught up in the bitter rivalry between Indian and Pakistani cricket fans when he was pictured admiring the blue shirt of the defending World Cup champions in a marketing photoshoot.

The 17-time Grand Slam winner shares the same sponsor as the Indian team and last weekend posted a picture on his Facebook page of him admiring a blue playing jersey with the caption: "Dressing up for a Gentleman's game today. #BleedBlue."

"It was more of a Nike thing to be quite honest," said the Swiss star on the eve of the Dubai Open.

"It was a Nike campaign they had because I met some of the Indian players and I had just spent some time in India so they presented the shirt to me.

"I support South Africa, and everybody knows that. The idea wasn't to spark any fire and I'm sorry if it did that."

The photograph certainly irritated Federer's legion of fans in Pakistan. Federer has certainly gone public in his support for the Springboks rugby team in the past, and has strong South African connections.

His mother Lynette is from South Africa and the Roger Federer Foundation has raised large sums to help disadvantaged children in the country.

Nevertheless, Federer sought to clarify his attitude to cricket, which is currently being showcased at the ongoing World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Indian team, he said, he supported "a little bit". Whether or not he followed cricket, "really depends where you are", he added.

"When I'm in America, definitely not. When I'm in Europe, definitely not. But then when I'm in Australia and here (in the UAE), a little bit sometimes. So it really depends where I am in the world which sport I follow."
