depicting a precision-guided 333mm Fajr-4 artillery rocket being dropped from an IRGC-ASF Su-22. No firing is shown; it may simply be a drop test, hence the BDU-33 training munition dropped with it.

Any manner of improvements - lighter construction, smaller warhead, optimised aerodynamics - could result in an even longer range, possibly approaching closer to 200 km.

The key being high speed reducing reaction time, and improving ability to evade short-range air defences. This, coupled with likely higher payload (and kinetic energy on impact) is a significant advantage over glide bombs. Also cheaper, easier to produce than cruise missiles.

Fajr-4 has similar dimensions to Rampage, which has an up to 150km range.

it could be a testbed for forthcoming air lunched fateh 110.....eventually we will have something like russian air lunched iskander.........could anybody estimate the range!

An Air-launched FATEH is most definitely something that the IRGC wants to work towards. The offensive options such a development gives Iran is really worth the extra effort, obviously Iran would need to fit it on an air-craft that could get the thing into the air but hopefully we will see that as well!

agreed an carbon fiber can help its wight, well when you lunch an missile in that height it tend to have 3 times more range than from ground launch soooo 250-300 km seems Ok.

Issue with range is guidance system. SU-22 cannot guide the rocket. And Iran using GPS/GLONASS during wartime is a joke.

Then why didn't they use a different plane?

What difference would that have made? Which Iranian Air Force plane can guide a missile to a GROUND TARGET? None

Short range sure you can rely on MM wave radar on the missile head or interial guidance or laser by the aircraft or TV guidance. But above 100KM you would need GPS/GLONASS for readjustment as errors in internal guidance cause small deviations in flight path.

Im not sure why people think this missile has 100-200KM range it’s like they think it’s propelled by magic. The original FAJR was an UNGUIDED rocket. The guidance system given to FAJR Hezbollah rockets To convert to precision guided rocket, Is probably just a simple system to keep rocket stabilized during flight and allow for minor course corrections in trajectory.

The Israeli rampage missile everyone quotes here is guided by GPS/INS.

Irans version could at best be guided by INS and a possible GLONASS redundancy fail safe. But how accurate is Iran’s INS system when launched from air?

That’s the big question

You are right, but Fajr-5 came in two versions: Fajr-5 and Fajr-5C. The later is claimed to be satnav guided.

And I don't know why we can't use GLONASS or BeiDou. But maybe IRGC is thinking about launching a dozen of cheap satellites like Nour in the LEO for replacing foreign satellite navigation systems? I wonder if that's possible. GPS satellites are in the MEO, so they aren't geostationary either.
