The failure of the Ganga Expressway offers a snapshot of India's chronic infrastructure woes and a reality check on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's recent promise to speed up more than 200 key projects.

Unveiled more than four years ago, it's all that remains of an ambition to build India's longest expressway, an eight-lane, 1,050-km (650-mile) road that would have run through Uttar Pradesh and connected one of the country's most backward regions to the doorstep of the nation's capital.

But having been in and out of the headlines for years, the project has all but crumbled under the weight of political wrangling, opposition from farmers whose fields would have suffered, and a court order in 2009 stalling construction on environmental grounds.

Officially, the Ganga Expressway still exists on paper, but with SP in power in Uttar Pradesh, it is unlikely to be built, at least for years.

Gurgaon Expressway - This expressway is among the lowest in satisfaction rating

Despite huge investments, hype and hoopla the expressway is marred by traffic jams. The ever so promised[citation needed] smooth ride is just a dream. The situations gets worse especially at peak hours and at tolls. It can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 minutes to cross the toll[citation needed]. The jams at other places on the expressway are very common[citation needed]. This expressway is among the lowest in satisfaction rating

Gurgaon Expressway only 28 km, an easy job helped by many foreign building companies

we are talking 1050 km Ganga Expressway, it's failed

You are talking about 1000km Expressway, I am talking bout 10,000s Km of Highway... :)

Ganga Expressway

Mission: construct a 1047 km access controlled eight-lane expressway running along the Ganga (Ganges) River.
Vision: to provide a flood control embankment[2] — floods being a major cause of agricultural and environmental damage, diseases and deaths during India's monsoon season.
Examples: expressway on embankment, the Rodoanel Mário Covas Expressway of Sao Paulo, Brazil. and implementation in the United Kingdom: River Trent on the right, flood prevention embankment in the centre and the parallel road leading to Gunthorpe
Obstacle: Construction work on Ganga Expressway has not yet started because of an order from the High Court of Uttar Pradesh. The order instructed that the state and the concessionaire complete a full environmental study and obtain permission from the central government before embarking on the construction. The concessionaire has completed the study and submitted its proposal with Ministry of Environment and Forests in New Delhi, in April 2011, to obtain environmental clearances, as required by recently enacted Indian environmental laws

Conclusion: Poor Planning...

Thank you for the update. I have to remember the Ganga Expressway is dead. Also, the 28km Gurgaon Expressway may have traffic jam problems.

you are kidding right? so many expressways are done, like these and u pick the one that is incomplete?
The question is why is this Chinese OP so perturbed about this particular incomplete expressway? Silly lemming! Here's the highway scene in India. Thousands of kilometers of four and six lane highways crisscrossing the country....

And he talks of one that's incomplete which is due to land acquisition problems. Why can't these clowns mind their own goddamn business instead of poking their noses in such issues that is of NO concern to them?

Even Pakistan has finished Coastal Highway which goes over Pakistan coast, India can't finish this?

Dude I have replied your query on the very same page, Look like you don't bother to read the posts.. You read opening post and start commenting, Keep habit of reading couple of posts before opening your mouth.

If you dont change ur behavior ppl will mock your IQ , just friendly suggestion...

why are Indians changing the topic?
The topic is about the Ganga Expressway
Not the other ones.
If you guys want to talk about the other expressways then open a new thread, and stop hijacking this one.

This is definitely not a good news for India. There is a lot of political wrangle. SP does not want to support what Mayawati has supported and UPA will rather bargain with SP on presidential candidates and other political issues rather than taking up economic issues.

Having stated that, for the people who want to talk about failure this snippet did not catch their eyes.

the $8 billion Golden Quadrilateral project, that links big cities New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai with modern highways, has been mostly completed.

There will be delays and cost escalations but ultimately the project will complete.
