Yes, he is there by default, nevertheless it is Britain's highest political position. His chances may not be good in general elections, but he doesn't come across cold and heartless in the two speeches I saw of him. I don't know anything about his political career and background.

I couldn't give a damn about these MP's. He wasn't even elected aside his seat.
Of course they didn't go to the leadership due to lack of numbers from the other candidates, however they all rallied to this guy as they were scared to death to take it to the membership. There are plenty of videos out there with conservative MP's saying they wanted to avoid a membership vote as last time Rishi lost.
