What's new

RIP to Kaveri

well i cant believe this news ,as no confirmation from govt sources ,but latest update on kaveri the links are here
.

The engine is still likely to be certified by the center of military airworthiness and certification by the end of 2012. This certification will be for the technology that the DRDO can demonstrate. Once this is done , one engine will be integrated with an LCA Mk-1 by early 2013 for limited flight trials.

But the hunt for Mk-2 with indigenous kaveri ends here.

In its annual report for 2010-11, The Comptroller and Auditor General of India[24] noted that 1,892 crore (US$421.9 million) had been spent on development, with only two out of the six milestones prescribed having being met. Among its deficiencies, CAG says the engine weight was higher then the design specifications (1235 kgs against 1100 kgs) and there was no progress on developing the compressor, turbine and engine control systems.
Weren't you better off buying engines from Russia ? It was a significant loss of tax payers money ... You could have purchased a couple of Aircrafts in that money ... And now DRDO thinks that it was only a TD ? Which Indian UCAV is in development which DRDO thinks can use this engine ?

I don't think we should give up yet. I hope the government changes and the project is revived again.

Transfer that Kaveri tech to some private firms like Mahindra defence or Tata..they will make it succesful..
Govt companies in India are incompetent

Well yeah that's true but tell me a countries name which has not made technology demonstrators? K9 might have or might have not been abandoned, but are you less aware of the K-10 development?

Now since you have started it,Which Pvt Company in India has facilities to capitalize on this R&D? Mahindra and TATA? TATA atleast has a small stake in Bladon Jets but do u think thats enough to broaden this?

This is pretty embarrassing if it's true. The cost of development is too huge to have no results. I think those involved in the project management and development process must be investigated for corruption and incompetence, and be punished if found guilty. They do not produce desired results because they get free funding and do not require to make profits unlike the private companies that need to increase shareholder wealth to simply survive. An in depth feasibility study needs to be conducted on the alternative uses of the engine, and they should be allowed only with a fixed development time frame and cost estimate.

Sure, DRDO has some achievements to boast of, but this failure overshadows them all and it will be long before DRDO can inspire confidence again.

They make take some time..but not 2 decades.. but much faster

I feel L&T, Tata, and other companies should be approached to conduct a feasibility study. If they say they can do it, they will do it, because they are not Government organizations that can get free funding and get away with it without producing any desired results. Presenting opportunities will enable private defense R&D. DRDO had no experience to start with, and can now share whatever it has achieved with private partners to improve the engine along with foreign assistance. 2500+ crores is too much public money and 20+ years is a lot of time to spend simply on a technology demonstrator. We might argue that other nations also took long to make their own engines, however the kind of development technology and computing power that was available during their development was inferior to what was is available to DRDO. If they cant do it in this time and with this money, they are simply incompetent as a whole.

You come to say if handed over them the Technology they would not take 2 decades? obviously not, why would they ? they have the technology in there hands!!

Presently they may lack the facilities, but one have to start somewhere.

Anyways lets start by licence producing some modern jet engines, then we can talk of another 'Kaveri'.

yea..but they will complete it ..not dump it at the end...

DRDO officials say the Kaveri aero-engine, which incidentally is over 22 years in the making by now with a sanctioned cost of Rs 2,893 crore, can power unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) because they "do not require the kind of higher thrust" needed for the indigenous Tejas LCA (light combat aircraft).

for those of us aren't familiar with the subcontinent number system and currency.

Rs 2,893 crore = 612 million USD

Engine Failure
:tsk:

Dream Project stutters to a stop,2000 crore and 20 years later

Two decades after venturing into an ambitious project to make an indigenous engine for our LCA, a project which was supposed to propel India into exclusive club of engine makers and meet domestic requirements with a 2000 crore rupees and 20 years of research , the engine project is abandoned for technical reasons.

However the Kaveri_snecma one with a projected 90kn thrust (+ reheat thrust) will be made and negotiations are still on.

What a shame!

DRDO is now saying it can power navy ships with modifications and can power LCA-Mk1 only.

Kaveri factfile

  • Lacks engine thrust reqd for LCA to perform its full envelope.
  • 2000 crores and 20 years.
  • Development effort reqd was underestimated at the time of sanction.
  • No database available for estimating realistic time and cost.
  • DRDO says its a major achievement in terms of technology demonstration.
where is the link to this news ? did anyone asked for it yet or Sparky is on his on adventure.
