Do not be foolish here... I personally know how cheap the people of Kolkata are... N you are saying that they will spend 15 rupee only for 1 kilometer instead of walking... Last time when my cousin went to India for vacation he came across a man who used to take mutiple route and walk to save only 10 paisa.... When my dad went to kolkata for government inspection visit ... the indian representative advised my dad to buy matches when my dad was looking to buy a lighter as matches is cheap...
Keep satisfying your ego by using stereotypes, you ll go places. I don't think 10 paisa coin is even in circulation anymore.
BTW since we are talking coins and cheapness here, last time I was in Kolkatta there was a shortage of coins there. Later on I found out that Bangladeshis horde and smuggle Indian coins into Bangladesh as well. Go figure
for the sake of argument even if we accept that rickshaw puller charge 15 rupee for 1 or 2 kilo meter distance only it should have been said so instead giving a random figure to reflect it as a universal figure...
Its kinda obvious isn't it. Rickshaw pullers aren't supermen. They can only go so far. No one in India uses cycle rickshaws for long journeys. Here's a quote from the original article you posted.
The study said an average rickshaw puller carries 40 person a day, mostly in shorter trips with median size 2.4 kilometre.
A driver usually demands Tk 10 for every kilometre distance. The maximum distance he drives is 10km, it said.
As for the main argument you put forward using this article that rickshaw pullers earn 6300 Tk/month, so they can't possibly migrate to India. Let me give you some more stats here.
There are approx 0.5 Million rickshaws in Dhaka, lets say another 0.5 million in the rest of the country. So thats 1 million rickshaw pullers.
Labour Force of Bangladesh: 73.87 Million
Unemployment Rate: 5.1%=3.75 Million
Underemployed: 40%
So there are still loads of people who don't have work. Not everyone can become a rickshaw puller you know. Just like every other service, demand and supply rule goes for rickshaw business too.
Furthermore, not every rickshaw puller owns the rickshaw. They have to pay anywhere between 25-40% of their earnings to rent a rickshaw from the owner. Not sure if the average earning of 6300 Tk is after or before that rent.
Mind you am not contradicting the fact that rickshaw pullers earn this much. They deserve every bit of it. But if you are going to use that as a proof that there is no migration from Bangladesh into India then my logic tells me to disagree with you.
