Rice exports: Pakistan loses market to India

Indian Basmati rice is far better than Pakistani Basmati rice, I can confirm that after trying both.
I think opposite and dont judge Pakistani basmati rice based on what you might get abroad because the best bastmati rice i had was in Pakistan and they sell it without any brand name..

In UK, indian branded rice are usually more expensive than pakistani one(kohinoor, akash)... tilda's owner was a gujju from uganda and sourced rice from india...
I cant tell the difference so I always buy pakistani ones... there are some discount or other with laila and badshah brand most of the year... :)
Tilda is expensive and you end up making kithcri because it need less water to be cooked ..ever treid this?

Open rice which they sell in Pakistan without any branding beat all rice brand i have tried abroad..

I tried this one in Canada. It's pretty good....but the brand is a Indian brand here:

Pakistan basmati rice is more variable here I find in quality. There are some very good ones....but they can improve their supply, promotions and marketing aesthetic a lot I find. Many people here buy rice when it goes on sale....and thats when a lot of the Indian basmati (and other varieties) get good discounts....but Pak basmati never seems to be in stock when that happens.

lol.. salam is my fav as its cheaper than even badshah and laila... and you can get it everywhere... :)
i think it has more broken rice than other brands.. but i dont care... but i prefer badshah to salam if it is on offer.

Honourable Sir,

If you read my post carefuly, I have stated that I found pillow from Tilda rice similar to one I used to eat in Pakistan during the 60's. Basmati rice qaulity improves with age. It is more than likely that Pakistani exporters don't let the rice age as much as some of the Indian brands.

I am now retired and my income including the odd consultancy work, is still rather limited. I am fussy about the quality of food items that I buy and I like good food and I regret my inability to travel to Pakistan to buy rice.

Switching to Indian produce was not easy because Tilda is more expensive. I however maintain that some brands of Indian basmati rice available in the UK super markets are superior to the two Pakistani brands (Laila & Badshah) that I used to buy from from the local Sainsbury.
lol you are exact opposite of me.. cheaper is better so badshah is best for me...
tilda is expensive because they are early movers(they started when rice in uk was horrible)... and they have consistent quality, they wont take shortcut as their reputation is at stake.
now they have sold the company to a US based food giant, i think it will get even better.

For some reason Pakistani Rice is expensive but Masala's and Pickles are cheaper than the Indian ones here.

Is the packaging and quality the same as the Indian ones?

Because they arent here (for the pickles). I don't want to buy pickles in plastic containers which the Pak companies seem a fan of.

Packaging is a bit conservative as compared to the bright and shiny ones like Kohinoor or Dawat. Most of the Pickles here come in Plastic jars even in India they were made of plastic.Don't like Indian ones because they are too watery as in excessive oil.MDH goes for double the price that of Shan.

Hmmm thats different from Canada, Indian pickles do have option to get them in glass jars....and good quality. I prefer the brand "Mother's Recipe".

I would buy the Pakistani ones if they came in glass jars too. It is just a pet peeve of mine I guess.

Pakistani Rice is as Good as Indian Rice -- But the whole issue is Marketing & Packaging

Your Exporters need to be Really Aggressive
Your govt must give subsidy to Farmers which leads to a cheaper product
Your Nations Good will also adds to your product in the market.

Take a simple example - --Type Worlds most expensive Basmati---
You will see only Indian Products.------This means Pakistani Farmers who generate equally good Products are "noway" near competition!!

My favorite is Zebra rice. The fragrance is distinct. I haven't found a different brand that can match it in this regard. I haven't tried too many different brands though.

Yes Zebra is quite good when available, there is another one (forgot name) that I saw 3 or so years ago that I tried and was ridiculously good....but has since never returned. A one off import I guess for whatever reason.
