Men across the world, as well as in India, are increasingly sharing intimate photos and nude videos of their partners after a breakup. The phenomenal is called revenge ****. Now for the first time, a man in India has been sentenced to five years of jail for sharing a nude video of his girlfriend after his relationship got over. The man, 23-year-old Animesh Bakshi,was sentenced by a court Bengal's East Midnapore district for sharing nude video of his 20-year-old girlfriend on a pornography website. Apart from jail time, Bakshi was also told to pay a fine of Rs 9,000.
The Hindustan Times reported that this was "Bengal CID's first conviction in cases related to cyber crime". It was also the first conviction in India in a case related to revenge ****.
The video was reportedly shot by the girl using her own mobile phone, which she had then shared with Bakshi. But soon Bakshi started blackmailing the girl using the video. This forced the girl to end the relationship, which infuriated Bakshi and he shared the video on pornography websites in May 2017. The video was incidentally seen by the girl's elder brother who told her, and the family about, about it. while the girl was reportedly distraught, the family decided to go after Bakshi and approached cops. The case was soon handed over to the CID and on July 21 Bakshi was arrested.
"I would use this occasion to salute the victim. It needed a lot of courage to withstand two days of vigorous cross-examination in the court that she faced. I devoted most of my time over the past six months for this one case, because she deserved justice in time," Bivas Chatterjee, special public prosecutor for CID, told the Hindustan Times. "What she suffered is virtual rape and she continues to suffer this. Several of the video clips are still live on **** sites".
While the case had an ending that may bring some solace to the 20-year-old victim, the whole incident also highlights the dangers of creating or clicking intimate videos and photos. In a connected world, recording anything private and intimate is fraught with risks because of the various ways in which the photos and videos can leak.
This is something people fail to realise at a particular moment in their relationships. They believe that the photos and videos that they are sharing will always be safe with their partners. In reality, that rarely turns out to be the case. The phones are stolen, or are sent to repair shops, and their memory cards are copied with contents sold or shared online. At the same time, there is always the risk of relationship turning sour and people trying to take revenge on their former partners.
