KARACHI: A retired army man and his son were shot at and wounded in the city's Gulshan-i-Iqbal area on Monday, police said.

Major (retd) Jamil Kiani and his son Jibran Kiani were severely injured when their car came under attack in Gulshan Block 13-D, said Superintendent Police Dr Fahad Ahmed.

Three assailants on two motorbikes opened fire on the former military man's vehicle, leaving him and his son wounded.

Both were rushed to a nearby hospital as rescue and law enforcement personnel soon reached the site from where they recovered at least 14 bullet casings.

Kiani is involved in the construction business and had a land dispute with a builder in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, the SP said, adding that the attack "may be linked to the dispute".

Karachi, a city of 18 million people contributing 42 per cent of Pakistan's GDP, has been plagued by sectarian, ethnic and political violence for years.

Police and Rangers are currently involved in an operation aimed at cleansing the city of terrorists and other hardcore criminals including hired killers, gun runners and drug peddlers.

This retarded statement

. .
What makes the statement so retarded?

It is obviously false. After all, we all know that Rangers have made Karachi crime-free these days. (Or so that post wished to claim. :D )

This big city can't be totally crime free but things are far far better but as some people have really short memories or are corrupt in minds therefore they lie and try to deny this.

Of course there is no doubt that law and order in Karachi is better than before, but still far from ideal. Quite far.

Quite a big deal because the person shot was an ex-Army official, how many "civilians" are shot like this? no one knows, or cares.

If he is an ex-Army official, then he must be in civilian clothes. How would a criminal know who he is attacking?

if it is indeed a business matter, then they would know. everyone knows everyone in those circles. and btw I am not talking about the shooting, I am talking about the coverage.

and the news specifically mentioning that he was ex-Army.

Oh I see. But a retired officer is just a civilian in business matters, and thus subject to the same risks and benefits as anyone else.

that is what I am saying. this happens, until and unless one is well connected. the issue is not that he was in the Army, the issue is the shooting, the report should have focused on that. mentioning that he is ex-Army somehow gives the impression that this case is different and should be given preferential treatment.

I agree with you here. Business crime as a whole should be reduced, just like all other crime, no matter who the victim.

Rangers is doing an excellent job but Karachi isn't totally crime free yet. Its a city of 18 million people filled with crooks and malefactors. It will take some time to settle the chaos. Till then i don't think its a retarded statement. :-)

But one may have a different perspective.

This part that you left out was important too:

The officer is from 73rd PMA Long course . I would advise jokers to keep their brain farts to them selves.
