A top US lawmaker has introduced a 'joint resolution' in the House of Representatives to express Congress's disapproval over an arms deal with Pakistan which includes the sale of eight nuclear-capable F 16 fighter jets to the latter.

"The government of Pakistan has been using weapons from the US to repress its own citizens and especially the people of Baluchistan," Congressman Dana Rohrabacher said yesterday after he introduced the resolution in the House of Representatives which is similar to Indian Parliament's lower House, the Lok Sabha.

"The deciding factor of whether to support this Joint Resolution is, for me, the arrogant and hostile actions taken by the government of Pakistan against the man who helped bring Osama bin Laden to justice," Rohrabacher said.

Earlier this month, the Obama administration officially announced it would go through with the US $700 million arms deal with Pakistan.

Alleging that Osama bin Laden was a "mass murderer" of 3,000 Americans on September 11, 2001, he said anyone who helped bring him to justice is an "American hero".

"The government of Pakistan arrested Shakil Afridi and continues to hold him in a cage. The arrest was a declaration of hostility toward the United States," he said.

"Our government should not provide military equipment to Pakistan, let alone F-16s, as long as they are holding Afridi.

His continued incarceration is an action which underscores that the government of Pakistan considers itself our enemy, not our friend," Rohrabacher said.

A day earlier, former Republican presidential candidate Senator Rand Paul introduced the joint resolution in the Senate to block sale of F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan.

The resolution (SJ Res 30) calls for prohibiting sale of eight F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, which the State Department had recently notified to the Congress.

It also calls for "prohibiting sale" of other military hardware to Pakistan including eight Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare Suites (AIDWES), 14 Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing Systems.

By the way, those articles of resolution are quite lame.

These are one of few senators on indian payroll, dosen't matter.Pentagon has given the go ahead.Pakistan is worth more to US more than any country in this region at current time.
These f-16 were first offered by US and pakistan accepted,if we were so desperate we would have approached Saudi lobby who controls entire congress unlike india who pay some third class senators.
India is still a nobody in US foriegn relations while Pakistan is at the forefront with US at afghanistan stage and they still need Pakistan for the next 50 years w.r.t Afghanistan.

Congratulations. Why only 50 years? May US "need" you for the next 500 years. I'll be happy if India manages to get it's work done.

Congressman Dana Rohrabacher
is one of the dumbest people in congress

.
why is that , doesnt the senate have the power to stop any policy/action unless it is vetoed by president?
Because resolutions do not have the force of law. They are just statements. They can be protest statements introduced by a member as in this case, or they can be when Congress passes a resolution naming February as "cat appreciation month".

The deal has already gone forward and so the only way Congress could stop it, (assuming enough members would even want to.), would be to pass and actual bill cutting off funding and of course, President Obama wants this deal to go through, so the bill would have to have 2/3rds of the members supporting it in order to make it veto proof.

Hi,

I welcome this resolution---and hope that it stops the sale of F16's to pakistan. This is going to be for the good of paf and pakistan both---.

It is just like taking a baby away from breast feeding---the baby would cry for a few days but then settle for the milk bottle to grow up more.

Thank you Rohrabacher---.

Hi,

The problem may not be now---it would arise at the time of delivery when there is a new president.

Obama is doing it to preserves his legacy---maybe the coming president may not want to do that.

A stunt at the time of elections and TV politics. meaningless and shameless.

.
Nice move by US congress men. What dumb Obama should do is now done by US congressmen.

.
