Egypt arrested a man on Sunday — identified in Israeli media reports as a U.S. citizen — suspected of spying for Israel and recruiting agents to destabilize Egypt, a prosecutor and judicial sources said.

The MENA news agency said the man worked for Israel's Mossad intelligence service. It named him as Ilan Chaim Grabel and said he was arrested at his hotel in central Cairo.

The Jerusalem Post said the man, whom it identified as "Ilan Grapel", is originally from New York and moved to Israel after graduating from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Judge Hesham Badawi of the supreme state security prosecution ordered the man to be detained for 15 days on suspicion of "spying on Egypt with the aim of harming its economic and political interests," MENA reported.

Israel's Foreign Ministry said it was not aware of the case. Officials at Egypt's Foreign Ministry could not be reached for comment.

Egypt, which in 1979 became the first Arab state to sign a peace treaty with Israel, has experienced months of political upheaval since protesters overthrew President Hosni Mubarak, who had maintained close ties with Israel.

Detention orders of 15 days are often renewed in Egypt if further questioning is deemed necessary.

'Inciting youths'
One judiciary source said the man had been active in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the revolt against Mubarak, after the former president stepped down.

"He was there on a daily basis inciting youths toward sectarian strife. He was distributing money to some of them," the source said, adding he had been encouraging some youths to clash with the army. He said youths reported the man's actions.

Friends of Grabel told the Post of his affinity for the Arab world, with one saying he studied Arabic and traveled throughout the Middle East and another describing him as "very pro-Arabic" and someone who liked "hanging out in Egypt."

"He probably went there for an adventure and to see Tahrir Square," one of the friends told the Post. "He is very left-wing and has been in Cairo before for months at a time."

A statement issued by Egypt's public prosecutor said the suspect had been sent to Egypt to recruit agents "trying to gather information and data and to monitor the events of the January 25 revolution."

The prosecutor also said that the suspect was "present at demonstration sites, inciting protesters to carry out riots and that would disturb public order and trying to stir strife between the army and the people with the aim of spreading chaos and a return to the state of security breakdown."

Alleged 'spy' in Egypt is US citizen, IDF paratrooper

Ilan Grapel, alleged Mossad spy who was arrested in Egypt fought in 2nd Lebanon War; Egypt claims Grapel incited youth to sectarian strife.

Ilan Grapel, the alleged Mossad agent arrested on Sunday in Egypt, is an American citizen who served in the IDF Paratrooper’s Brigade during the Second Lebanon War and interned last summer at the Israeli Supreme Court.

Grapel, originally from New York, moved to Israel after graduating from John Hopkins University in the US and enlisted in the IDF.

He was wounded during fighting against Hezbollah guerillas in the southern Lebanese town of Taibe in August, 2006. In an interview to the New York Daily News in 2006, Irene Grapel said her son decided to enlist in the IDF since he "didn't want a boring life" and craved some adventure before enrolling in graduate school.

A friend of Grapel’s told The Jerusalem Post on Monday that he had worked as an intern at the Israel Project – an Israel advocacy organization - in 2008 and had studied Arabic and even lived for short period of times with Druse communities in northern Israel. He frequently traveled throughout the Arab world.

In recent years he was a student at Emory Law School and even interned at the Israeli Supreme Court, according to the Emory Law School website.

“He probably went there for an adventure and to see Tahrir Square,” the friend said. “He is very left-wing and has been in Cairo before for months at a time.”

On Sunday, Egyptian Judge Hesham Badawi of the supreme state security prosecution ordered Grapel to be detained for 15 days on suspicion of "spying on Egypt with the aim of harming its economic and political interests," MENA news agency reported, while claiming that he worked for the Mossad, Israel’s espionage agency.

One judiciary source said the man had been active in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the revolt against Mubarak, after the former president stepped down.

"He was there on a daily basis inciting youths towards sectarian strife. He was distributing money to some of them," the source said, adding he had been encouraging some youths to clash with the army. He said youths reported the man's actions.

The US State Department was also informed Monday that a US Israeli citizen was under arrest in Egypt.

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson told The Jerusalem Post that there has still been no official confirmation that there is in fact somebody in Egyptian custody, and if there is, that it is Ilan Grapel. Reports Sunday and Monday said that an American-Israeli citizen had been arrested by Egyptian authorities on suspicion of spying against Cairo for Israel.

Asked whether the American government is involved in efforts to release Grapel, the spokesperson said that if, as is reported, Grapel is in Egyptian custody and does hold US citizenship, he assumes that the Americans will be making their own efforts to have him released.

Report: Suspected Israeli spy arrested in Egypt was traveling to Libya
Egyptian prosecution is claiming that American-Israeli Ilan Grapel met with several Europeans in southern Egypt before traveling to Cairo upon Mubarak's resignation, al-Ahram reports.

Ilan Grapel, the Jewish American citizen detained in Egypt under suspicion of espionage for Israel, planned to get from Egypt to a rebel hub in Eastern Libya, Egyptian daily al-Ahram reported on Tuesday.

The Egyptian paper reported that the Egyptian prosecution is claiming that Grapel met with a group of people, some of whom were European, in southern Egypt before traveling to Cairo on the day of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's resignation.

The report said that Grapel entered Egypt on February 11 on a direct flight from Frankfurt, Germany. He then left the country on February 15, only to return on May 10 and checking into a hotel in the center of Cairo.

The Egyptian authorities announced on Sunday that they had arrested a suspected spy for Israel. Egyptian media published Grapel's name and identity on Monday.

A former paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces with dual American-Israeli citizenship, Grapel reportedly travelled to several parts of Egypt, and was given the task of gauging the public's reaction to the policies of the Egyptian high military council.

Earlier reports have claimed that Grapel entered Egypt as a foreign writer for an American newspaper, meeting with a group of foreign reporters he kept in touch with throughout his stay in Egypt.

Did you think about this idea yourself or someone helped you? Everywhere Jews and Americans running the show in the Muslim world, while the people have no will of their own and they are like marionettes.

I am willing to bet that there is bigger chances that AQ Khan and Hamid Gul are running a spying network for the Americans than the probability that this young Israeli is a spy. Again, as usual, very soon it would turn out that it was much ado about nothing.

I was not wrong on the release of Raymond Davis and I will be right again.

kill him, all spies should be killed, and let dogs eat his dead body if hes a real spy.

raymond davis was a cia guy hitman to be precise, US govt finally admitted it, where r u living, on mars???, he was also 'convicted' which means he is not innocent, he was only released on the law of blood money, which is a money paid in compensation by the murderer to the victim's family, plus the family got americn passport

and im very shocked about what the israeli american was doing there in a violance hit place except work on secret things on his govt payroll esp contacting islamic jehadists who are rebels, is it safe there?

these jehadists as mericans call them, they had been and still have been incited through religion and only work for american/jewish purpose, and they dont even know it

. .
Israel is really pissed off why the dictator and their stooge Mubarak is in jail. Now the real Egyptians will determine their destiny. Israel is intrested in destabalizing all muslim countires and the US. That is why Mosaade did not share the intelligence of 911 with the US, so US can get hit and then fight all of Israels enemies with US money while Israel sits and watches.

In the Davis case all along I argued that he would be release from Pakistan and sent back to the US, while your Pakistani friends in PDF were convinced that he would be trialled in Pakistan and the Army and government will not "succumb" to American pressure.

They were wrong like you are wrong now.

This Israeli is not a spy, you know there are Israelis who go abroad even to Arab countries as tourists, not all of us are spies.

This Israeli guy choice of tour destination as Egypt was indeed foolish. Even before the current unrest the Egyptian security forces used to arrest innocent Israeli tourists and blame them for spying, only to free them a few days later. Although we have a peace agreement with Egypt it is a cold peace and the Egyptian society remained one of the most hostile towards Israel, and their newspapers and officials do not hesitate to use anti-Semitic slogans and illustrations to describe Israel.

With friends like them who needs enemies.

You successfully wrote a reply that doe not contain a single argument which is true. Good for you!

Yada yada yada.

All the Pakistanis in this forum were absolutely sure that Davis would be trialled in Pakistan and sentenced for death or for life in prison.

This so called trial and blood money he had to pay (or whatever it called) was just a façade for Pakistan's government not to loose face.

The judicial system of Pakistan is as partial as China on the Kashmir conflict. It is influenced by the political forces and of course the military-intelligence complex. If the entire handling in that incident was all right, then why there was so much rage against the government in Pakistan after Davis was released?

Anyway soon you would be able to claim that the Israeli in Egypt was freed after he was "trialled".
