Report: Indian army could use Russian satellite navigation system.

Oct 6, 2011, 11:13 GMT

Moscow - India's military is considering using Russia's Glonass satellite system for navigation and targeting, a leading Russian newspaper reported Thursday.

Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov offered Delhi access to the system during a recent meeting with his Indian counterpart Arackaparambil Kurien Antony, Kommersant newspaper wrote.

Glonass is a worldwide satellite navigation system similar to the US' GPS system. Russia placed its 24th Glonass satellite into orbit on Monday, upgrading the system to full worldwide coverage.

India could use Glonass for monitoring and controlling its own ballistic missiles and would avoid the cost of setting up its own worldwide satellite navigation network, the report said, citing a senior Russian army officer.

Russian army spokesmen have said that the Glonass system would allow guided missiles to strike targets anywhere on Earth with an error margin of less than one metre.

Antony was in Russia from Monday through Wednesday on a visit devoted primarily to talks on ongoing and future arms acquisitions from Moscow.

Topping India's Russian arms shopping list are a nuclear submarine, a retrofitted aircraft carrier and modern tanks.

Russia in 2010 sold some 3.5 billion dollars of weaponry and military equipment to India. A recently signed deal worth 1.5 billion dollars will deliver 29 MiG-29 fighter jets to India's navy by the end of 2012, according to news reports.

We already have plan for Military satellite soon beside few Spy satellite. Few already operational. What this will make difference ? Any more advantage ? If Yes, Then we should BUY. :toast_sign:

Now this is what i call an ally....
We ask something and they trust us with it no matter how close it is to there chest...and vice versa.

.
seems like a good short term alternative . till our own systems come into play .

.
This should be a fill-gap measure. The best would be indigenous GPS system.

. . .
well done Russia!!!!!.....this is the kind of relationship 2 potential superpowers should have!!:yahoo:

. .
Russia should give 100 nukes with tot

Do you mean Fissile material for 100 warheads???? Wats the need for tot in that???

GLONASS would be welcome indeed,..... but I fear using this might slow down the development of our own Satellite navigation system (GAGAN)

Here we are talking about navigation satellite. Its like US GPS and our IRNSS which is still under development and only covers Asia and few parts of Africa, Australia etc. IAF is already using Glonass. Even after IRNSS gets ready by 2015-16 we will use Glonass for global coverage.
Spy satellite and military communication satellites and recon satellites are different.

Interesting...I believe Pakistan will get access to Chinese Beidu GPS system and mapping...a future war will be a precision strike...first see first shoot...a fair and balanced parity.

Yes, you are right, certain features of the Glonass are already in use with us. We deliberately opted out of a number of communicatcation/navigational systems when we purchased the C-130Js and the C-17s from the US so that we could replace them with Russian ones. Our indigenous system will take some more time to be fielded and the coverage will not be complete when fielded.

glonass is a good alternative as compare to the GPS. Still not sure if indian nevigation system can be as per these gps and glonass. As per my knowledge indian system would be strictly used for military only.
