Removal Of Autocannon GSH 23 / 30 From The JF 17:--

Electronic Flanker

This comparision of the J-16D to the baseline J-16, done by noted aviation journalist Andreas Rupprecht, shows that the J-16D has removed its IRST sensor and 30mm cannon, as well as installing addition antennas.

Compared to the baseline J-16, the J-16D has removed its Infrared Search Tracking sensor and 30mm cannon to accommodate more electronics inside its fuselage.

I have two observations here.

1. The usual gun placement is on the starboard side of the forward section of an aircraft. Before putting a fuel tank there instead, stability analysis has to be carried out. This is because the gun remains there through out the mission whereas the full tank will get emptied in the due course. Perhaps, the control computer can take care of the resulting weight imbalance. But this has to be seriously studied.

2. A better idea to extend the loiter time and CAP endurance is to look into the buddy refuelling. Hornets and Fulcrums are capable of this, though both being bigger platforms. May be Bk3 can have an extended body with an even more poweful engine. BRef can perhaps then be turned into reality for JF17. This comes with the added advantage of keeping the refuellers far away from the hot zone.

Lets remove all the weapons on the aircraft how is that ? lets do that ? lolz I cant believe this thread is still open.

The thunder already has no Hmd and modern high off bore sight dog fighting missle.

Huge huge weakness over bison mki mirage 2000 and fulcrum.

So when the thunder fails with its wvr all that is left is the cannon.

You take that out what is left

Just long range bvr with kill.ratio of 1 on 5 shots at over fifty kilometres .

And stand off strike weapons.

Your need is to add hmd and hobs and keep cannon. Imo

Hi,

By that time---how much fuel the aircraft will have to do a dogfight----.

Hi,

There is a very serious discussion going on at sinodefense forum---that the J20 does not have a built in cannon---.

The discussion is going on because it has merit---.

Where is a " fuel fractions " superstar---. When we needed him the most---he disappeared---.

As to other posters---same question to you as well---when the time comes to engage in a dogfight for a cannon shot---from where will the aircraft acquire the fuel to be in the fight.

After evading the BVR's and WVR's the actual merge has happened---in trying to dodge the missiles---the aircraft has been burning fuel like crazy after dropping the drop tanks---.

I agree with fuel issues buddy.

Without fuel you are dead.

Hence many airforce buy twin engined or larger single engined fighters carrying more fuel.

The thunder lacks in fuel as well then
