KARACHI: Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Thursday that Pakistan army is a national army and that religion is a private matter of an individual.

The ISPR director general’s comments come days after former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law Capt (r) Safdar from the floor of the National Assembly called for a ban on induction of Ahmadis in the army.

Addressing students of the University of Karachi during his visit to the campus, Major General Asif Ghafoor said that “in order to be Muslims, we don’t have to chant slogans, but prove, through our deeds, what we believe in. If we adhere to the principles of Islam, the world will recognise Pakistan as an Islamic country.”

He said that “one does not have to prove to the world that one is a Muslim; it is between one and the Almighty.”

Differentiating between terrorism and fundamentalism, the ISPR DG said that not every fundamentalist was a terrorist, as “I am also a fundamentalist.” “(Likewise) not every terrorist relates himself with fundamentalism,” he said, “Western countries and Indians are also fundamentalists.”

“If I’m someone who wants everyone to view the world through my perspective, then I’ll not be called a fundamentalist but an extremist,” Ghafoor said.

“If I force others to agree to my ideologies, then I’d be called as the one who is prone to violence or terrorism,” he said.

“I do not have to prove to the world that I am a Muslim; it is between me and Almighty Allah,” he said. In order to be Muslims, “we don’t have to chant slogans, but prove through our deeds what we believe in,” he said. “If we adhere to the principles of Islam, the world will recognise Pakistan as an Islamic country.”

The ISPR director general stressed that Pakistan was one of the most beautiful creations of the Almighty and it was valued the most geographically as well. “When someone wants destruction of a country, then it targets its security forces first.”

He termed it fortunate to be able to visit the campus, saying he was surprised to notice the number of women students being relatively higher than men. “It was said that Soviet Union’s arrival in Afghanistan posed a threat to Islam,” he said.

“The Soviet Union was ousted with the assistance of the US,” he said. However, he added that the US launched an attack on Afghanistan following 9/11. “When those fighting the US did not find refuge in Afghanistan, they entered Pakistan,” he also said.

“We successfully completed Zarb-e-Azb security operation; we systematically cleansed our areas of the terrorists and today, there are no safe havens of terrorists in the country,” Major General Ghafoor said.

. . . .
In presence of all these temples, synagogues, churches, mosques, jamat khanay etc ........... I fail to understand how any religion is fully one's personal matter.

University of Karachi

This university has been in limelight for quite some time now.

He said that “one does not have to prove to the world that one is a Muslim; it is between one and the Almighty.”

Negative .......... don't know in what context he said this, A true Muslim is to be a role model for all others. Emphasis being on True, that may be a rare species these days ...... or if not rare may be in hiding.

seems that this is one instance where the DG ISPR is completely and utterly wrong
you would have to be one heck of a libtard to say something like that at such a high post
also means you would have very little love for religion
as Iqbal Ali has said,Islam and state are not separate and that its a western concept.
the DG ISPR should take back the statement.

I do not see religion as a private matter of an individual.

There is no separation of state and religion in Islam.

Separation of state and religion is a western concept.

Separation of state and religion is called Sultanate System from Ottoman Empire. Ottoman Empire brought the concept of secularism and democracy as the way of system to ensure the spirit of equality in place. Europe under Ottoman Empire in most period of times learned that concept from Muslim philosophers and thinkers in regards to the concept of secularism, multiculturalism and democracy which shaped the Modern western world as we know today.

That is exactly what Islam also promotes; equality. Hence the coined term 'Islamic democracy' which Jinnah (R.A) proposed in terms of secularism to promote equality in spirit while under the domain/banner of GOD.

Because of that ideology [Separation of state and religion] in Canada, that is why we as Muslims including you are allowed to practice Islam unopposed.

Why is separation of state and religion should be encouraged for Muslims to practice Islam in Canada but not for Non-Muslims to practice their faiths unopposed in Pakistan? That is beyond hypocrisy, it is retardation.

.
To be honest, Muslims are hypocrites of highest level. In Muslim majority countries they want to enforce their wishes on non-Muslims and have no regard for their religious sentiments, but in countries where they are in minority they demand respect, freedom and everything which they don't agree to give others.

Agreed. That's why Pakistan has become an Islamic Banana Republic

Why is separation of state and religion should be encouraged for Muslims to practice Islam in Canada but not for Non-Muslims to practice their faiths unopposed in Pakistan? That is beyond hypocrisy, it is retardation
Because Muslims in the West are still a minority. As long they remain they will keep asking for more personal freedoms in regards to religion. As soon they get a majority, tables will turn and then they will ban personal freedoms for non Muslims, as it happened in Pakistan

@The Sandman you should better watch the complete piece. Cherry picking and cherry popping are two different things just so you know

I don't know when religion became personal business 3 years back my younger brother applies for ISSB and he was made to fill a form and under religion section there was a clause about finality of Prophet Mohamed PBUH and candidate must signed that he is not following Ahmaidya and off shoot Lahori Group.

But I believe before 1979 the personal already inducted still serving even on General post. Some doubts about Gen Bajwa and I believe N.S knowngly appoints him since non Muslim can't became president or chief executive so there is no chance for COAS to do coup against N.S but know since army is lashing PMLN daily they got agitated and wants to blackmail COAS by bringing his religion in parliament.

Misinformation nahi urao yr..

Ghalat baat hai

. .
Why religion is repeatedly commented in ISPR press conferences ?

So something is fishy about Boss ;)
ispr should avoid speaking on matters of which they are not expert as it will damage army image

Get a drift of why ISPR talk about religion, excerpt from an article:

While combating the TTP propaganda, the Frontier Corps used FM radio stations effectively, challenging the Maulvis and their reprehensible ideology profusely. A new dial-in system was introduced which allowed people to interact live. Young boys and girls were exhilarated and gladly took on the so-called defenders of Islam. On getting a ruling, the Frontier Corps handed over the Radio Stations and its facilities to ISPR.

terrorism is reduced because of religious scholars who condemn it and preach peace and true Islamic teachings and also by Public using social media
