Must be a cultural shock. In the western world, children aren't the "properties" of their parents. The government, acting on behalf of the whole society, can rip them from their parents who are deemed to be incapable of their care or even be harmful to them

This is actually a serious problem in the Nordic countries. Even Norway some years ago had a diplomatic issue with India, where an Indian couple's kids were taken away from them, just because the neighbours saw the kids eating food with their hands and considered it as child abuse.

I find it shocking why and how some authority can be given such blanket power, without any accountability. There is also a strong chance that members of such government departments will be abusing their power.

What legal defense do parents of non-white families have? Expats can engage their embassies to negotiate on their behalf, but refugees have no one to fight for them.
