TO OUR GOOD AND LOYAL SUBJECTS:

After pondering deeply the general trends of the world and the actual conditions obtaining in Our Empire today, We have decided to effect a settlement of the present situation by resorting to an extraordinary measure.

We have ordered Our Government to communicate to the Governments of the United States, Great Britain, China and the Soviet Union that Our Empire accepts the provisions of their Joint Declaration.

To strive for the common prosperity and happiness of all nations as well as the security and well-being of Our subjects is the solemn obligation which has been handed down by Our Imperial Ancestors and which lies close to Our heart.

Indeed, We declared war on America and Britain out of Our sincere desire to ensure Japan's self-preservation and the stabilization of East Asia, it being far from Our thought either to infringe upon the sovereignty of other nations or to embark upon territorial aggrandizement.

But now the war has lasted for nearly four years. Despite the best that has been done by everyone – the gallant fighting of the military and naval forces, the diligence and assiduity of Our servants of the State, and the devoted service of Our one hundred million people – the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage, while the general trends of the world have all turned against her interest.

Moreover, the enemy has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is, indeed, incalculable, taking the toll of many innocent lives. Should We continue to fight, not only would it result in an ultimate collapse and obliteration of the Japanese nation, but also it would lead to the total extinction of human civilization.

Such being the case, how are We to save the millions of Our subjects, or to atone Ourselves before the hallowed spirits of Our Imperial Ancestors? This is the reason why We have ordered the acceptance of the provisions of the Joint Declaration of the Powers.

We cannot but express the deepest sense of regret to Our Allied nations of East Asia, who have consistently cooperated with the Empire towards the emancipation of East Asia.

The thought of those officers and men as well as others who have fallen in the fields of battle, those who died at their posts of duty, or those who met with untimely death and all their bereaved families, pains Our heart night and day.

The welfare of the wounded and the war-sufferers, and of those who have lost their homes and livelihood, are the objects of Our profound solicitude.

The hardships and sufferings to which Our nation is to be subjected hereafter will be certainly great. We are keenly aware of the inmost feelings of all of you, Our subjects. However, it is according to the dictates of time and fate that We have resolved to pave the way for a grand peace for all the generations to come by enduring the unendurable and suffering what is unsufferable.

Having been able to safeguard and maintain th Kokutai, We are always with you, Our good and loyal subjects, relying upon your sincerity and integrity.

Beware most strictly of any outbursts of emotion which may engender needless complications, or any fraternal contention and strife which may create confusion, lead you astray and cause you to lose the confidence of the world.

Let the entire nation continue as one family from generation to generation, ever firm in its faith in the imperishability of its sacred land, and mindful of its heavy burden of responsibility, and of the long road before it.

Unite your total strength, to be devoted to construction for the future. Cultivate the ways of rectitude, foster nobility of spirit, and work with resolution – so that you may enhance the innate glory of the Imperial State and keep pace with the progress of the world.

Japan would have never opted to fight with US in 2nd world war had Commodore Perry incident of 1852 and later US oil embargo on Japan not sowed the seeds of hatred among Japanese towards the US hegemony. Okinawa is still under occupation and I don't know it will take another 10 or 100 years but Japan will wake up one day to take revenge. A huge fire even after it is put off leaves some sparks buried deep inside the ashes.

. . . .
Exactly. I wonder why and how other people insist on ignoring the present for what happened remotely in the past?

We have to think of the nature of transformational relationships. Nations, like organisms, adapt to the demands and requirements of the times. Nations , mature ones that is, have to learn to get over the past , and move on towards the future.

In the field of psychology , the wanton holding of intrapsychic tension is known as "repression" and this is actually an immature defense mechanism, which results in abnormal behavior in an individual. Repression affects Nations as it affects individual organisms.

Not just psychology, international geopolitics works this very way too.

Yes, you're absolutely right. I think it is immature for the average Japanese to think of revenge for the consequence of a war-time era. The war time era is over, Japan and the United States have made leaps and bounds some 70 years since the conclusion of that destructive conflict.

From the ashes of that destructive war, came forth the current world order. Japan is now a Democracy, no longer an Imperialist Hegemonic Power. I prefer the Japan of now than the Japan of the past, an Imperialistic one that driven by racist ideology that saw the Superiority of the Japanese "Race" and the "Inferiority" of other subject peoples.

Sometimes, we have to consider why things happened the way it did. It was God's Will that Japan was defeated, and that America was victorious.

Things happen for a reason.

Al-Hamdulillah! Allahu Akbar !

I admire Japanese people.

In modern history of war, No nation has been damaged to an enormous extent in few short moments.

And yet

Once the leadership decides to change course, majority of the nation changed.

Worked so hard that within short time became an economic power.

Imagine this.

Pakistan and Japan have similar type of population (about 200 million)
Pakistan has enormous natural resources compared to Japan.

And yet we lack descipline to work like Japanese
And thus we are at the bottom of the heap so to speak,

So my hats off to Japanese leadership and its people.

They dealt with a very harsh and very tough situation, dealt with lot of war related trauma, and came out as winners.

Now only if others can understand the importance of what you have just said! :D

I also like to see things not just in the lens of diplomacy and mechanics. I like to consider the spiritualist explanation of why things happened the way it happened. The Japanese Empire was clearly an aggressive power, many injustices were done onto many Asian and Western peoples by Japanese Soldiers. Japanese Empire caused massive deaths, in the tens of millions in Asia, in a war that was , for all practical senses, a War of National Vanity.

When the world was changing and seeing the gradual demise of imperialism, Japan was fighting for a decaying ideology--- an Imperialist Ideology. It was a vain attempt really, the consequence of the war, was due to poor planning by the Japanese Military Government, and the propaganda machine enacted by the state government.

Mind you that the Japanese Military Government not only lied about the prospects of the war, fooling the public that the Empire was winning against the Allies, all the way until American Bombers were flying over Sacred Japanese Airspace and dropping bombs on Sacred Japanese Soil.

Never again shall Government of Japan have a role in controlling media in such a nefarious and insipid way. What did we gain in that war? We lost our core territories, we lost over 3.5 million soldiers, over 1 million civilian casualties, and we inflicted over 40 million deaths in Asia.

Introspectively, my friend, Japan was the 'Evil' in that war. I hate to say this, and i mean in no disrespect to our revered war dead because they fought honorably, but I blame the Government in Japan for leading us towards a course of war. When diplomacy could have been chosen could have been possible. Instead, the Military Government chose a path towards war.

God Punished Japan with defeat. And a once Mighty, and Proud Empire and People were brought Low.

Holy Scripture warned us , "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall"
-Proverbs 16:18

Well said.

Question for you.

You think there were intellectual leaders like Fukuzawa who helped transition Japan from feudal / agrarian society into an industrial society.

However such intellectuals leaders were perhaps missing that could have helped a relatively gradual transition from imperial-industrial society to a more modern democratic-industrial society?

.
Many people under estimate Japanese and think they are those "hai, hai, wakarimashita" type of polite people. Very few non East Asian really understand them and think they are gentle people.

These folks are extreme kind of East Asian. Japanese hide all their emotions and they are martial race.
