LAHORE: Punjab will seek Rangers’ help in countering terrorists, an apex committee headed by Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif decided on Sunday.

Among the many important decisions taken in the provincial apex committee session, it was decided that relentless operations will be conducted against terrorists and their facilitators.

Those sheltering terrorists and their facilitators will not be spared. All important and not so important workers of banned organisations will be arrested, it was decided in the meeting.

The exact procedure on how to utilise the Rangers’ help in countering terrorists will be laid out later.

CM Shehbaz Sharif, addressing the session, vowed to “root out all terrorists and their facilitators from the Pakistani soil.”

“The entire nation is united on the war against terrorism. These terrorists are a scourge on our home soil, and we will root them out,” the chief minister said.

The civil and military leaders attending the session offered fatiha for the martyrs of the deadly blasts which hit the country over the past week and expressed solidarity with the injured and families of the victims.

The officials also expressed concern on the use of Afghan soil by terrorists to orchestrate attacks in Pakistan.

The session was attended by National Security Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) Nasir Janjua, Corps Commander Lahore Lieutenant General Sadiq Ali, Provincial Minister for Anti-Terrorism Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Mohammad Ayub, Director General of Punjab Rangers Major General Azhar Naveed Hayat, GOC 10 Division Major General Sardar Tariq Aman, Chief Secretary, IG Punjab and other civil and military officials.

What's the purpose of having a police force if Pak will always rely and depend upon the courageous efforts of the Army and Paramilitary forces? People of Punjab especially the rural heartlands might as well form clan militias to help the Rangers. Many villages in northern Punjab are fully armed and well equipped and very patriotic.

.
I dont think they are taking over law & order, but they are definitely getting more powers/responsibilities to act on terrorists.

If they were taking over the law & order, they would need at least and extra 100,000 more men to do that job; at that point it would just be easier to create a new force.

Finally.
Ok that is why some reports suggested that pmln is gonna lose around 100 seats.

.
Law and Order and Security will be improved only when a VIP is safe as the common Pakistani is. So, take back the thousands of LEA's deputed on VIP security, Internal security agencies working just to keep an eye/spying on political opponents and deploy them to ensure the security in general.

.
Reality check: They are only taking assistance not handing over the law and order up to rangers. Rangers role will still be very limited.

.
Will rangers be given the same powers as they do in karachi ?
“The deployment of Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, in Karachi is requisitioned under Article 147 of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973, and under Clause 1 of Sub-section 3 of Section 4 of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, authorised to prevent the commission of terrorist acts, or scheduled offences in notified area for the punishment of terrorist in accordance with the provision of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997,”

Or is this merely a lipservice, just to reassure the public ?

. .
Lal Masjid should also be included since they support Daesh. Anyway this is a step in the right direction no more tolerance for terrorist goons where ever they are.

LAHORE: Punjab Home Department submitted on Monday a summary to the federal government, requesting deployment of Rangers in Punjab for around 60 to 90 days.

The request has been made under Article 147 of the Constitution, which allows the provincial government to entrust its functions to the federation, and Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.

The powers to Rangers would be given under articles 7 and 10 of The [Pakistan Rangers] Ordinance, 1959, said the source.

According to Article 7, the paramilitary force “can assist the police in prevention and detection of crime in border area and reinforce the police for maintenance of law and order.”

Moreover, Article 10 allows the government to “confer or impose upon any member of the force powers or duties conferred or imposed on a police officer of any class or grade by any enactment.”

A committee, comprising officials of interior ministry, Rangers and police, will be formed to decide Rangers’ powers in the province.

According to sources, Rangers will be allowed to carry out operations in case of emergency. The raids will be carried out on the basis of intelligence reports.

The request for deployment of Rangers in Punjab comes after a series of back-to-back explosions across country including one in Lahore on February 13, in which 14 people including policemen were killed.
