India is beginning to develop a new, longer range nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) local media reported on Monday, citing unnamed sources.

A scientist with the Defense Research and Development Organization, India’s military technology agency, told The New Indian Express that DRDO is secretly developing a missile with an initial range of 7,000 km. Currently, India’s longest range ballistic missile is the Agni-V, which has a range of about 5,000 km.

The same source said that the missile that is under development as the Agni-VI, but which will ultimately be called Surya, could eventually be extended to have a range of 10,000 km.

Earlier this week DRDO chief Avinash Chander had said that India was capable of developing a missile with a range of 10,000 km within two and a half years if necessary.

He also suggested that New Delhi was not interested in utilizing this capability.

“Range is the least problematic area,” Chander said, according to The Times of India. “We have the full capability to go to any range…it's just a question of additional propellant and larger motors. But, as of now, we don't see the need for a higher range” and the need arises we can hit any target or city in the world.

The Agni-V allows India to hit any nook of China and its largest cities are now under threat from Indian missiles.

Although the Indian media often refers to the Agni-V as an ICBM, its range of 5,000 km is slightly less than the international standard for an ICBM, which is 5,500 km. Thus, Surya will technically be India’s first ICBM.

As previously reported, India has been working on equipping the Agni-V with multiple independent re-entry vehicles (MIRV) that would give it the ability to carry multiple nuclear warheads on a single missile. The scientist who spoke with The New Indian Express on Monday said that Surya would be made slightly heavier in order to carry even more nuclear warheads.

“While Agni-V can carry up to three nuclear warheads, the next missile in the series can carry up to 10 nuclear warheads, capable of hitting multiple targets,” the DRDO scientist said, according to The New Indian Express.

The same report suggested that the Surya will be ready for testing within two years.

This indicates that development of the missile may be encountering difficulties. The first reports of the Agni-VI’s existence from earlier this year suggested that development would take just two years. Those initial reports also said that the Agni-VI’s initial strike range would be between 8,000 and 10,000 km, instead of the 6,000 km reported on Monday.

The defence organisation, which has an annual budget of over Rs.10,000 crore, now has no choice but to reinvent itself. The agency's research has drifted away from its core competence in recent times. It has been accused of "wasting time and precious resources'' being engaged in research and development of technique for detection of pesticides in fruits, technology for dengue control, dental implants, foldable stretchers and berry juice.

The moribund agency is also suffering from employee attrition. Over the past five years, while the report of the Rama Rao Committee has languished, around 1,700 of its 7,900 engineers and scientists have left for better opportunities in private companies. The depletion of talent will be the last stage in what cynical insiders say is the process of converting DRDO into a dodo.

Orgs like the DRDO are too precious for a country like India. Price cost is never a factor for national security.

DRDO has kept us safe from BULLISH eyes.

The army is not impressed by DRDO's performance either. Says Major-General S.V. Thapliyal, a former deputy director-general for perspective planning at army headquarters in Delhi, "DRDO promises to manufacture. It nixes our plans to acquire from abroad. It does not meet the deadline. Worse, it does not maintain quality either. The soldier, the end user, is the worst sufferer.''

..........“While Agni-V can carry up to three nuclear warheads, the next missile in the series can carry up to 10 nuclear warheads, capable of hitting multiple targets,” the DRDO scientist said, according to The New Indian Express.

.......Those initial reports also said that the Agni-VI’s initial strike range would be between 8,000 and 10,000 km, instead of the 6,000 km reported on Monday.

What we see is an admission that Agni-V is already a MIRV :azn: .....it carries 3 nuclear warheads.

Agni-VI is stated to have a range of 6000 km with a 3000 KG load ...........we all know what that means :D

No missile in the world is going to take off with a 3 Ton warhead. That is the payload of a satellite launcher. What it really means is the actual payload will be 1500 kg, and the range goes up considerably.

There have been delivery vehicles with a three ton throw-weight, the soviets in particular loved ginormous throw-weight parameters. Reducing the payload is not as simple an exercise as envisioned by many, trajectory shaping is far more crucial for range enhancement.

That having been said, range indeed is not an issue atm and higher grain propellants are coming up quite quickly these days. The advantages of learning how to make the cake without a pre-packaged cake mix are many.

I did not mean reduce payload. I suspect the payload is not really 3 ton and the range is not really 6000 km. That is just an eyewaash for the general public and reduce the alarm factor.

The attempt is going to be to increase decoys and other ABM evading tech and increase the number of warheads.

India already has significant breakthrough in micro grain propellant. It is as good as anywhere else in the world. We developed CL-20 in 2009 and ONC in 2010.

DRDO cheif... Apna Moo Bandh rakhne keliye kya lega??????

Why ? He has earn more rights to say all this than you have the right to post worthless comments in pdf.

Why not take your own advice ??

India has no enemies in Europe and other continents, Avinash chander should talk sense here. India is no threat and India"s defence budget is aimed at defending against bullying.

Indeed hitting any city in the world had never been issue for India, its the missing balls infact.
