50 injured as police, BCL men attack Rana Plaza survivors
At least 50 people were injured as alleged activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League and police on Wednesday attacked the survivors and relatives of the workers feared missing after the Rana Plaza collapse .
Witnesses said that the police and BCL activists launched the attack when over 1,000 survivors and relatives of missing workers were demonstrating in front of the collapse site in Savar demanding compensation and rehabilitation of the maimed workers. The disaster left over 1,100 people dead and scores missing.
The protesters, under the banner of Rana Plaza Garments Workers Union, blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway for about three hours from around 10:00am.Suddenly a group of BCL activists numbering 25-30 attacked the demonstrators with iron rods when police were negotiating with the demonstrators.
The area virtually turned into a battle field when the police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the workers who retaliated by hurling stones at the attackers.Witnesses and protesters said at least 50 people were injured in the attack. The angry workers vandalised about 10 vehicles on the road.
Savar police picked up three people named Sabbir Ahmed, Masum Ali and Salman from the spot.‘Police detained three people during the trouble,’ Savar police station sub-inspector, Shajjad Rumel admitted. He also said police were negotiating with the demonstrators when some ‘unidentified miscreants’ attacked them.
Majed Molla, husband of a missing worker of Phantom Tec Limited, said that BCL activists had launched the attack on the ‘peaceful’ rally of the workers.Local unit of BCL, however, denied their involvement in the attack on the demonstrators.
When approached, CM Badsha Faisal, the first joint convener of Savar upazila BCL unit, brushed aside the allegation saying no activist of the ruling party was involved in the attack.
Earlier in the morning, after marching in a procession on the Dhaka-Aricha highway, the survivors and relatives of the victims started a sit-in in front of the collapse site and vowed to continue their protests. The police asked the demonstrators to end their sit-in but they refused until a government official came to the spot with an assurance of meeting their demands.
At one point the BCL activists launched the attack, according to the witnesses.
During the sit-in, the workers demanded punishment of the local AL lawmaker Talukder Md Tauheed Jong Murad and Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana.
Garment Workers Trade Union Centre adviser Manjurul Ahsan Khan, joint general secretary Joly Talukder, Garment Workers Trade Union Centre’s Savar unit president Tuhin Chowdhury and secretary KM Mintu and Rana Plaza Garments Workers Union president Lavly Akter and general secretary Akash Sheikh, among others, spoke at the sit-in. Manjurul Ahsan Khan called on the workers to stage peacefulprotests until their demands were met. He alleged corruption and irregularities in giving financial help to the workers and their families.
