@ajtr I don't know when you left India for the United States, but here's an update for you:
1. The modern Indian does not know words like sudra.
2. Chanakya stopped being popular in 1980's with the end of the TV show.
3. I googled and found out 30 Jan is Gandhi's death anniversary apparently. NO ONE CARES besides the obligatory references in govt institutions and schools. It's not even a holiday in a country obsessed with holidays.
4. India is trying hard, very hard, to remain secular in a neighbourhood of religious fanatics. That meant that our leaders used to blackmail us using religion and caste. Not anymore. Nowdays we don't care if you are a Hindu, a Muslim, a Sikh, a Christian, a Scientologist, an Athiest etc etc as long as you can ensure economic progress and development. Case in point, defeat of NDA in 2004, Narendra Modi, Sheila Dixit, and recent victory of Nitish Kumar in Bihar.
