The Ram Mandir dispute in Ayodhya may be sorted out soon. The Supreme Court today sought an urgent hearing on the matter next week and offered to play a mediator to sort out the controversy after suggesting the contesting groups to try for an amicable solution by talks, reports said.
The SC intervention in the matter comes just a few days after
BJP returned to power in the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh and installed Yogi Adityanath as the Chief Minister of the state. The Yogi has been a vocal champion of the construction of Ram Mandir at the controversial site in Ayodhya, which is considered by a majority of Hindus as the birthplace of Lord Ram.
Yogi’s Gorakhdham Math was at the forefront of Ram Mandir movement in Ayodhya in the early 1990s. During the election campaign recently, Yogi had claimed several times that Ram Mandir will be constructed if BJP comes to power in the state.
The court has asked the contesting groups to think of ways for an out of court settlement in the case. If the negotiations break down then SC will intervene and appoint a mediator for resolution.
The Apex Court has asked lawyer and BJP MP Subramaniam Swamy to mention the matter on or before March 31 after the former sought urgent hearing saying it was a sensitive matter.
The Supreme Court has favoured mediation, instead of a court-directed solution, to pave the way for the construction of Ram Mandir at the disputed site in Ayodhya.
While talking to reporters after the SC directive, petitioner Swamy welcomed the apex court move. He also expressed confidence that the matter can be solved amicably. Along with Swamy, several other BJP and RSS leaders also welcomed the SC move. However, the groups opposing the construction of the Ram Temple at the disputed site said that the days of negotiations are over and only the court can solve this issue.
The Ram Mandir issue has been shaping the political colour of the country for around three decades. The contentious matter has been pending in courts for around 20 years.
