Abductions of Hindu children on the rise in Sindh

Islamabad, Oct 17 (IANS) Hindu families in remote parts of Pakistan's Sindh province are planning to relocate following an alarming rise in the number of kidnappings of Hindu children.

Only recently, five-year-old Dheeraj Kumar was freed after 35 days in captivity when police arrested the abductors who had sought Rs.10 million in ransom.

The family was overjoyed to have him back but decided to quit Kandhkot -- where they had lived for generations -- and settle elsewhere.

Dheeraj is not the only one. But he is the first abducted Hindu child to freed without the payment of ransom, says the daily Express Tribune.

Since the beginning of this year, at least eight children have been kidnapped. All of them were released only after hefty sums were paid to the criminal gangs.

Peer Chand (4) was let freed Rs.200,000, Pewish Kumar (5) for Rs.330,000, Sagar Kumar (5) for Rs.170,000, Veeraj Kumar (7) for Rs.350,000 and Mahik Kumari (3) for Rs.100,000, according to Hindus in the region.

These are the cases that got reported to the police. It is believed that the number of unreported cases is much higher.

Narrating their ordeal, Dheeraj's uncle Gyan Chand said the 'boy was kidnapped in front of us on the day of Eid.

'He was taken to the nearby village of landlord Ali Memon Khoso, which is generally a forbidden territory for others.

'When around 40 residents followed Dheeraj to Khoso's village with a resolution not to return without saving him, police intervened and sent them back, promising the child would be returned soon,' Chand said.

Later, the police told the stunned family that Khoso would not be released minus ransom and that the parents would have to raise the money.

'It was only after the media and the civil society intervened that there was pressure on the kidnappers to release the child without taking ransom,' he said.

District Police Officer Kashmore Syed Asad Raza Sheikh said the boy was found safe but shaken after a heavy contingent of police confronted the bandits.

Hindu residents of the region insist that kidnappings have increased due to worsening law and order situation.

And in this uncertain scenario, Hindu families find themselves most vulnerable.

Gyan Chand recalled that the crime rate in Sindh was much lower when army chief Pervez Musharraf ruled Pakistan.

All the victims of kidnapping belong to one family or have a relation to business-oriented families, said Suhail Ahmed Abro, provincial manager of the NGO Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child.

'Since the families always agree to the conditions put forward by the kidnappers, their children have become more vulnerable,' he said, adding the criminals target them due to lack of resistance by the victims.

Hindus agree that children of other communities are also kidnapped but the rate is still high among Hindu families.

They also complained that Hindu members of parliament and provincial legislatures have failed to protect the community, a microspic minority in Pakistan.

'Since they are not representatives of the community but selected members of ruling parties, why would they serve their people?' asked Ramesh Kumar, patron of the Pakistan Hindu Council.

Dheeraj's father Shashpal Das is overjoyed that his son has returned home safely.

Too afraid to name the kidnappers, he vowed to take his son to the dargah in Shikarpur 'where his mother is waiting to receive him before their gods'.

Other Hindus have had enough of the lawlessness.

Said Gyan Chand: 'I will go to Karachi and sell chana-chholay on a push-cart. I won't stay here now. This is no life.'

Hindus lose heart as kidnappings rise

At least eight children of the same family kidnapped since the beginning of this yea

KARACHI: The Hindu families living in interior Sindh are planning to move to other cities as an increasing number of their boys are being kidnapped.

When five-year-old Dheeraj Kumar was released by kidnappers after 35 days on Wednesday, all his family could think of was to leave Kandhkot and settle somewhere else. He ran towards an overjoyed father while his mother was busy praying for his safe return at a dargah in Shikarpur.

Dheeraj’s kidnappers had demanded Rs10 million in ransom but had to surrender when the police intervened. While Dheeraj is surely not the only boy kidnapped in Kashmore, as kidnapping of Hindu children have once again taken a toll in upper Sindh, he is definitely the first one to be released without the payment of ransom.

Since the beginning of this year, at least eight children of this family have been kidnapped and released in return of a hefty ransom. Four-year-old Peer Chand was released for Rs200,000, five-year-old Pewish Kumar for Rs330,000, five-year-old Sagar Kumar for Rs170,000, seven-year-old Veeraj Kumar for Rs350,000 and three-year-old Mahik Kumari for Rs100,000.

These are only those cases that have been reported to the police and it is believed that the number of unreported cases is much higher.

Narrating their ordeal, Dheeraj’s uncle, Gyan Chand, said that the boy was kidnapped in front of them on the day of Eid. He was taken to the nearby village of landlord Ali Memon Khoso, which is generally a forbidden territory for the residents.

When around 40 residents followed Dheeraj to Khoso’s village with a resolution not to return without saving him, the police intervened and sent them back, promising the child would be returned soon, Chand recalled.

Later, the police started telling them that Khoso will not let the child go without ransom and that they should make arrangements for money. “It was only after the media and the civil society intervened that there was pressure on the kidnappers to release the child without taking ransom,” he said.

DPO Kashmore Syed Asad Raza Sheikh said that the boy was recovered after a heavy contingent of police confronted the bandits. The Hindu residents insisted, however, that cases of kidnappings have increased due to the weak law and order situation. Chand also pointed out that the crime rate was much lower “when the army had control in Musharraf’s era”.

One of the underlying factors behind these kidnappings is that all these children either belong to one family or have some relations to business-oriented families, said Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child’s provincial manager Suhail Ahmed Abro.

Since the families always agree to the conditions put forward by the kidnappers, their children have become more vulnerable, he said, adding that the criminals target them due to lack of resistance by the victims.

Hindu residents agree that children of other communities are also kidnapped but the rate is still higher among Hindu families.

Dheeraj’s uncle accused the Baloch population and the police of being the masterminds, who have made it into a business by minting millions of rupees from poor people.

Residents have also complained that the Hindu MNAs and MPAs have also failed to protect their community. Since they are not representatives of the community but selected members of ruling parties, “why would they serve their people?” questioned Dr Ramesh Kumar, patron of Pakistan Hindu Council.

Meanwhile, Dheeraj’s father, Shashpal Das, said he is “extremely happy” that his son has returned safely. Too afraid to name the accused, he said that he would take his son to the dargah in Shikarpur, where his mother is waiting to receive him before their gods.

On the other hand, Chand is too tired of the lawless life in his district. “I will go to Karachi and sell channa cholay on a push-cart,” he said. “I won’t stay here now as there is no life like this.”

That is because Pakistan does not have sizable minority(less than 2 % compared to 15% at the time of partition- wonder did they all convert??)

However regular attacks have taken place on minority groups!!

Good to hear that local residents and media helped them in their efforts to get the child back.

But never a pogrom and always by a few extremists who would just as easily attack their coreligionists over interpretations.

what do you call targeted blowing up of Ahmedis??

Yes, that is indeed true.. Takfiri ideology does have a lot buyers there.

But if possible that is even sadder, as Pakistan was created on the basis..that we(Pakistanis) can live together with people belonging to certain religion and hence need a separate country..but turns out some of those can't even live together with their co-religionists.

And they accuse us of discrimination against muslims !.....when Hindu population statistics decrease these incidents are conveniently brushed under the carpet.....one more reminder of how lucky we all are to be born in a country with a tradition of religious/cultural/linguistic tolerance.....

honestly, as some people make it their business to be concerned about muslim welfare irrespective of country or region.....we would do well to seriously concern ourselves with Hindu welfare , particularly in our nieghbourhood.....hypocrisy is something we have been tolerating with eyes wide open long since........

For ransom I guess ..a few days back a few Sikh kids were kidnapped..some believe that non-muslims should give tax(jaziya) for living on Muslim lands.

What's wrong with that? After all, Pakistan was created for Muslims of the sub-continent.
