Man jailed for attack on Indian taxi driver

A MAGISTRATE yesterday lambasted drunken attacks on vulnerable taxi drivers and night-time convenience store clerks, while sentencing a man to three months' jail for threatening to kill an Indian cabbie.

Ballarat Magistrate Michelle Hodgson yesterday sentenced 48-year-old local man Paul John Brogden, who had been arrested for attacking a 24-year-old Indian taxi driver only hours earlier.

"Regardless of race, violence toward people who are in vulnerable positions, performing valuable services to the community - valuable jobs like driving taxis or working in 7/11s - violence toward these people will not be tolerated," Ms Hodgson said.

Brogden had earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful assault, one count of criminal damage to property and making threats to kill.

The court heard that Brogden had commenced an extended binge drinking session at about 9.30 on Thursday morning, and during the day he drank 24 VB stubbies on top of taking several Valium tablets.

At about 2 o'clock the following morning, Brogden had called Ballarat Taxis and was picked up by driver Satheesh Thatipamula. On the way back to Brogden's home in Navigators on the outskirts of Ballarat, in Western Victoria, he became verbally abusive towards the 24-year-old Indian taxi driver, after assuming the driver had taken him the wrong way.

The court heard that Brogden swore: "When you drop me off I will kill you, you mother f . . . ing Indian. I will kill you, you f . . . king Indian bastard."

Fearful for his safety, the taxi driver pulled into a service station and got out of the car. Brogden then pursued Mr Thatipamula into the service station store before assaulting him and another unknown man who was pumping petrol.

THE family of an Australian man found dead in India say a growing number of foreign tourists are being murdered and the crimes covered up by authorities there.

At least 10 Australians have been murdered or feared murdered in violent attacks in India since 1999, with claims that up to 200 westerners have been killed. In what is expected to further heighten tension between India and Australia, the families of dead Australians say the subcontinent nation is hypocritical in attacking Victorian authorities and are calling for an investigation by the Rudd Government.

They are also issuing their own travel warning to Australians planning to visit India, saying they are "taking their lives into their own hands".

Melbourne disability pensioner Michael Osborne was found dead in a guest house near the city of Patna with his bank account empty and most of his belongings gone less than three weeks into a dream visit to India last June.


Indian police initially said the death was due to a drug overdose but when pushed for detail twice changed their story, saying he died from injuries sustained from a fall and finally that the death was caused by zinc phosphate poisoning.

Patna police told the Australian High Commission in New Delhi the death was not suspicious and that there were "no apparent external injuries to Michael's body".

But a post mortem report reveals the body had a catalogue of injuries, including brain haemorrhaging, an abdomen cavity "full of blood", scratches and abrasions on his left arm, elbow, wrist and leg and right side of his chest and hip.

It said: "All abrasions caused by hand and blunt object."

Osborne's brother Laurie believes he was beaten to death and has not ruled out a racial motive. But Indian and Australian authorities appeared to have closed the book on the case, he said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will not say how many Australians had been killed in India. But the Tourist Justice and Safety in India group, set up by families of murder victims, have listed 10.

The Indian media has recently painted Melbourne as a racist city and condemned a string of violent attacks against Indian students.

But Laurie Osborne said his brother's death was the latest in a line of attacks against Australians being swept under the carpet by Indian authorities.

"We want to warn Australians going over to India that they are in danger," he said.

"Especially if they are going by themselves. Indians jump up and down and say that Australians are attacking Indians but look at what they are doing to Australians."


See, hypocrites. Nothing is said about Aussies let alone westerners getting killed but when an indian gets killed everyone starts crying out for justice.

I remember a couple of years ago an aussie family was murderd for being christian by a hindu mob. About 200 people mob forced the family into there car and then burnt them alive, just for being christian.

NEW DELHI: The alleged rape and murder of an Australian tourist near IGI airport on Wednesday has once again fuelled speculations that the city

The incident comes exactly five months after the rape of a Swiss diplomat in south Delhi.

While instances of murder of foreign nationals are few and far between, several incidents of their harassment have been reported in the last few months. Foreign women seen alone in public places are clearly the most vulnerable lot.

The airport incident comes close on the heels of the rape of a Fijian student in southwest Delhi on March 7.

She was spotted alone outside a five star hotel by the accused, a travel agent, who offered her lift and took her to a park where he allegedly raped her.

A 22-year-old German tourist was allegedly molested by four youths in the Gole Market area on February 27.

The victim, who had come to India on a tourist visa for a month, was walking towards a restaurant around 11 pm when she was apparently pounced upon by the youths travelling in an Indica car.

The accused fled after she shouted for help, but were arrested the next day after the police managed to trace their car.

"It's a fact that foreigners are vulnerable to attacks by miscreants. Many such incidents even go unreported," admitted a police officer in New Delhi district.

In another incident on March 11 this year, a Japanese woman was forced to part with $ 200 and her belongings by her taxi driver and a hotel owner.

The woman had hired a pre-paid taxi from the airport on her arrival from Tokyo. The driver took her to a hotel in Old Rajinder Nagar. The hotel owner, however, offered her accommodation in his home at Lajpat Nagar where she was robbed.

There is still no clue about the whereabouts of a British woman who had been reported missing from New Delhi railway station in December last year.

The woman had boarded a train to Delhi from Mumbai and was said to have spotted for the last time at New Delhi railway station.

The rape of the Swiss diplomat remains unsolved even five months after it took place. Police claim to have questioned more than 10,000 people in the case.
