FAISALABAD: Unemployed people and landless farmers can generate a good amount of income by rising rabbits with small investment. Rabbit meat contains high level protein, calcium, and vitamins more than other animal species.

This was observed by Hira Komal and Dr Sehar Aamir veteran experts of the University of the Agriculture, Faisalabad in a study conducted on rabbit farming, also known as cuniculture. Giving details of the study Komal told The Express Tribune that rabbits need small place to live and can survive even on less food. She said rabbits were very more docile than poultry and birds.

“There is a misconception about the meat utility of rabbits in our society as it has extra ordinary potential of calcium and phosphorus contents of its meat are more than any other meat. Besides, cholesterol fat and sodium of rabbits are less than other meats,” she said.

Dr Sehar Aamir pointed out that Pakistan was the sixth most populous country in the world. “The more the population of a country is, the more it needs sources of food and shelter,” she said.

“To meet the demand for food, we cannot rely on just beef and mutton. Rabbits are known as ‘micro-livestock’ and a great source of food. There is a great opportunity for rabbit farming in our country. But most of the people just keep them as pets,” she added.

“Rabbits can be grown in a small place but it should not be too congested. With a small investment, we can make house for rabbit in our house yard or on a building roof and start rearing rabbit. We can make house for rearing rabbit in two methods,” she said while explain the methods.

“To keep rabbits commercially cage method is the best. In this method, rabbits are kept in iron cages. A rabbit should be given enough space in the cage along with food armaments. Male and female rabbits should be kept separate from each other. They should keep in same rood when they need mating to produce baby rabbits,” she added.

She said green leafy vegetables including, spinach, carrots, cucumber, green grass and vegetable waste can easily be used as food for rabbits. For commercial rearing, even poultry food can be used to feed rabbits.

She said with a good management, one can achieve genetic potential of rabbits for weight and size which, of course, vary according to breed and sex. Some rabbits may grow up to size of a big cat. The average weight is 3-4 kilogrmmes.

According to the study, with rabbit farming, Pakistan can meet the ever-growing food demand and increase the income of farmers with little investment. It will also make a significant share in meat production and can have a positive impact on the economy of Pakistan.

What scam was that details please?
Lolz, that was hilarious. A company promised a 100% profit (almost). 1.4 Lakh on 1.5 Lakh investment. They said that they will use the money and invest it in Emu farming claiming that it is a huge profit business and they will return 1.44 Lahk profit in 2 years on a 1.5 lakh investment. Just in any other ponzi scheme, they returned good profits to the first investors, the word spread, more and more people started investing until one day the company simply disappeared :D
Consider it Indian double Shah with touch of wildlife to it

Leave the rabbits for the cats. The next revolution for human food generation needs is neighborhood-level Vertical Farming and Urban Farming.

I would include hydroponics and aquaponics to bring about revolution in urban farming.

I agree.

Add to that drip-irrigation for the crops part.

And since neighborhood-level farms would be needed, the system would need only five or six storey buildings instead of the impractical 30 storey ones.

Lol! One things for sure you don't even need to do anything and there will be a million of them in no time. They need no maintenance. They will completely ignore vegetable gardens and happily eat grass and clover.

This year the wild rabbit population has gone crazy where I live. What used to be an occasional cute critter bouncing around from house to house has turned into a dozen. The little neighborhood kids are in heaven.

I think @Gomig-21 said he has two living in just his backyard. Now multiply that by a million houses.

I've lost count, bro! lol. I think there's at least 7 different ones that I counted at one time.
About a month ago it was one of those humid nights and almost a full moon and I got up in the middle of the night, went out on the deck in the back and all 7 froze still for about 3 minutes. Not one of them moved a millimeter lol. I wish I could physically do that. Then they ignored me completely and went back to eating the grass.

Sometimes I'll leave the house really early like 5:30 am and it's still dark and as soon as I step out the side door, there's 2 or 3 of them about 10 feet away and they freeze up again loooool but they don't move. They don't scare too easily until you move towards them. Then they blast away at the speed of light. Cute buggers, I don't mind them at all and my wife loves them anyway so I have no say in the matter. My cat, on the other hand, would love to bring one of them back to me as a gift, like he often does with robins and starlings, but I think they're too fast and too cautious for him. :-)

I used to worry about accidentally walking into a skunk outside (Argh! That'll ruin your month quick) Seems the rabbits have scared them all away. Don't see any possums either. Did see a big raccoon on my deck the other night making a racket going through some trash. I was trying to shoo him away from behind the glass and he was doing the "oh yeah...why don't you come on outside here and make me!!!" Should have thrown a shoe at him. Don't need rabbies.

Kept rabbits for many years. They multiply very quickly, their heart beat goes faster when picked up in hand. They prefer to eat cabbage over carrots. They can dig burrows to long distances and can easily damage any sort of vegetation. I made a hutch on ground with cemented bricks on sides at a level higher than ground and made an opening in the ground for them to dig burrows. I would cover the opening of the hutch in evening after rounding them to keep them safe from my dogs which i unchained at night. Thankfully the dogs never dug in ground to hunt or kill my rabbits. Rabbits can jump high and kick with hind legs at attacking animal. They respond to whistling or clapping or any other sound and do come near owner to get food.

I remember introducing a pup to the rabbits, the pup and one of the rabbits approached each other very slowly and cautiously, touched noses and instantly both ran in opposite directions
That was a sight i can never forget:victory:

Didn't even know if it was halal to consume. Never even thought about it. Guess you learn new things every day.

Rabbits look cute, I wouldn't eat it (don't care who does). Chicken, beef for me, and fish :D
