National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today condemned the attack on the students who have been demonstrating in the capital’s Shahbagh demanding reforms in the quota system in public services.

The commission also expressed concern over the incident, said a NHRC press release.

“We learn from different media and social networking sites that Shahbagh intersection turned into a battlefield following police action on the protesting students and sporadic clashes took places between them,” the NHRC said in the release.

Kazi Reazul Hoque, commissioner of the NHRC, urged the authorities concerned to hold talks and resolve the issue as soon as possible.

He also called upon to the authorities concerned to take action against those people who were involved in the attack on the Dhaka University vice chancellor’s residence.

Yesterday, at least 75 people were injured as police clashed with students demanding reforms in the quota system in public service, turning the capital's Shahbagh intersection and its adjacent areas into a battlefield.

Police fired several hundred teargas shells and rubber bullets, used water cannons and charged batons to disperse the demonstrators who blocked the intersection for over five hours since 2:30pm yesterday.

A section of the protesters broke the main gate of the residence of the Dhaka University vice chancellor around 1:45am today. They vandalised furniture and other belongings, and also torched three cars inside the compound, according to witnesses and fire service personnel.

Quota for FF's DNA carriers are dumb. Need to be eliminated entirely. However,

??? Why on earth would they do that? Now it makes them the bad guys. Just protest, why destroy property? Really not the way to get people to be on your side.

The vandalism was done by BCL cadres and some hired goons to undermine the protests with the permission of the DU VC who is now being referred to as 'Mir Jafar' by DU students. The actual protesters were completely peaceful and unarmed and in fact greeted the Police with roses.

And the incident is a clear proof how the Bangladeshi media has sold themselves out. The local reports over this issue are fully manipulated.

Some of the iconic pictures of the protests,

This is one of the rare events in recent years that the whole nation is united over a national issue.

Kinda ironic that AL chose to antagonize themselves by opposing this;
if they peacefully gave in to the demands of the general students and reformed the quota structure to acceptable levels (if 10% was too low, 15-20% would've been acceptable to the majority) , then they were guaranteed 3-4 million votes, and if fair elections were to occur this might have given them the edge.

But, they instead chose to appease the minority (which numbers something like 2% of the population), and further antagonize their potential votebanks by labeling them as "jamaat shibir"!

That is indeed a blunder on their part. The PM directly announced last month that there wouldn't be any reform of quotas in a rally at Chittagong. That just fueled the anger of the students.

This time they are quite determined to bring a result out of the protests. A reform of these meaningless quotas is long overdue.

BAL don't need public support anymore, so who cares? They are going to be elected anyhow. And quota system acts as a filter to recruit BAL people in administration.

Most of BD journalists are hypocrites. Dedicated journalism has long gone . I don't believe these liars .
Btw hasina is now watching the real power of common folks .
She should understand that she is still in power because public isn't seriously working for eye washing democracy.
But the movement against chetona quota should open the blind eye of PM sheikh Hasina .
And also anti bangladeshi PDF trolls ( both Indian and pakistani; original or false flaggars) should realize the power of BD folks from this anti quota movement instead of barking against BD and its population.

I have read about the existing quota in post #5 of @Riyad. So, can you or anyone explain what the protesters want to make changes in it?

The objective of this movement was to

1. Reduce the quota percentage from 56 to 10.
2. No "quota only" jobs.
3. If there aren't enough candidates with quota, then the reserved positions would be filled on the basis of merit.
4. No special treatment to candidates with quota (like reduced negative marking, same pass marks and such);

and as a cherry on top, they also requested to increase the age limit of government jobs from 30 to 35.

Chetona quota seems to be are those 30%, reserved for Freedom Fighters. I wonder how after more than 45 years there can be any more FF? I know, FF quota means a quota for the sons and grandsons of the FF. It means, it is for the Awami Chetona group.

It is important to build corruption free democratic institutions. Selecting AL supporters in the name of FF quota is against the spirit of democracy and merit-based civil service exams. Without a fair election it is almost impossible to gradually get rid of this kind of political corruption.

I have a feeling that torturing these demonstrators with smoke bombs will become the last straw that will break the back of corrupted AL.

we dont need fair election, we just need an honest leader at the helm.

Well, it is just your personal opinion. Thing is, a country needs fair election that are held periodically and is transparent. This is how a strong leadership comes out in the front, though it may take time. The autocracy in BD is a recipe of its total destruction because it inhibits the forming of vital institutions as it is less functional in the long term. A real democracy is slow to develop the country, but ultimately does better. We are supporting short term benefits at the expense of a long term progress.

I would agree with you if the voters were educated and informed. Ours is a poor country and so the percentage of educated and informed voters are negligible. Voters generally are party worshipers of one party or another. Rarely does anyone ever support their party because of their policy or oppose the other because of theirs. It's always working backward from conclusion where they first conclude their is right, then they go on to look at what they right about and preach that and also try mental gymnastics for making the wrong in some arbitrary way right. And the opposite for the party they hate.

Sure there are moderates, but they are few and far between. Fair election would bring good result maybe when BD becomes developed country but until then, it won't help as much as you think it would. I agree on the premise of keeping democracy though, because once the semi dictator is out, country needs to stay stable and the people should choose their next leaders.
