Qualcomm Gets Price-Target Hike As Handset Makers Buy Its High-End Chips

Wireless chip maker Qualcomm (QCOM) might have lost business with Apple (AAPL) in the current generation of iPhones, but its other customers are picking up the slack by buying its high-end mobile processors, a Wall Street analyst said Tuesday.

Qualcomm's share of the market for smartphone application processors fell in the third quarter, mostly from iPhone business lost to Intel (INTC), Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Christopher Rolland said in a report to clients. It also lost ground as Samsung and Huawei shifted to proprietary chips, he said.

Snapdragon Chips A Plus For Qualcomm
On the plus side, customers using Qualcomm chips gravitated to its 600 to 800 series Snapdragon chips as the premium segment of the smartphone market grew last quarter, he said. That provides potential upside to Qualcomm's average selling prices in the third quarter, Rolland said.

"We also expect the trend to continue into 2019 as in Asia we learned of some handset makers planning to release 5G handsets next year," he said.

Rolland reiterated his positive rating on Qualcomm and raised his price target to 84 from 70. Qualcomm stock rose 1% to 73.35 on the stock market today. It reached a four-year high of 76.50 on Sept. 18.

Susquehanna evaluates the components used in about 300 new handset models released each quarter worldwide. It published its third-quarter report on Tuesday.

Power Integrations Gets Price-Target Cut
The report noted continued growth in stereo speakers and microphones per device last quarter.

Also, the number of radio-frequency bands supported in smartphones continues to increase, rising 22% year over year in the third quarter.

New handsets have nearly 20 radio-frequency bands per device. The new iPhones have about 40 radio-frequency bands. And that's ahead of the introduction of 5G wireless technology, Rolland said.

The increased radio-frequency content in smartphones is good news for chipmakers Broadcom(AVGO), Skyworks Solutions (SWKS) and Qorvo (QRVO).

The adoption of rapid-charging technology dipped in the third quarter, Rolland said. The technology was implemented in 65% of new designs coming to market, down 1% from the previous quarter, he said.

That news is a modest negative for Power Integrations (POWI), Qualcomm and ON Semiconductor (ON), Rolland said.

He lowered his price target on Power Integrations to 70 from 75 and maintained his neutral rating. Power Integrations stock dipped 0.2% to 61.37 on Tuesday.
